Cocaine...or Alka Seltzer?

Was that cocaine or Alka Seltzer Capt. Stanley's wife dumps in his water for breakfast? If it's cocaine...was that just a pick me up for the morning? No coffee? That scene left me a little confused at the ambiguity of what was in the drink.

Most likely it was something akin to the original Bromo-Seltzer. IE it was a pain reliever, an antacid, and a sedative.

Opiate...common treatment for headaches back then.
