The least they could have done was deny that there was a kidnapping and claim it was a prank. Basically all the witnesses would have favored that defense.
Yep, they were just kids, posing as criminals. I think that's sort of the point of the film, which I didn't find that compelling.

I can't believe how apathetic people have become. We're at the point, where cops are practically wishing that they wind up finding a bodie mutilated beyond repair so that they have an "interesting" case. Geezes, there goes my faith in humans, once again.

No one said anything about wanting these guys to get away with it. Personally, I too, was astounded at how stupid they were, too. They thought killing the boy was a smarter option than simply getting him wasted and dropping him back at his parents house?
