The curse has followed her because she's managed to avoid being killed so far, they come into contact with it through her, anyone killed by the curse becomes part of the curse.
The newspaper on the windows is because the grudge ghosts of the other two girls(Vanessa and Miyuki) and are watching her from outside. It's explained better in the original version and done better (in my opinion) in the original.
