Early reviews are not giving me much hope

I was ambivalent about the trailer, but hoping for the best. The reviews that are posted so far are not giving me much hope, though.

Darn. I had my hopes up for this.

reply

Disappointing but not exactly surprising. The early buzz it had going made me hopeful.

I’ll be seeing it nonetheless. There’s been a few recent movies that received a similar mixed response/unfavorable reviews and yet I ended up really liking them. I feel genuine excitement for Alita.

reply

Well they're not exactly opening this film up as a summer blockbuster, should be our first clue. Nor has their been a wall of promotion. They're just chucking this out there. Hopefully it's cult film cool.

reply

The trailer didn't look good. There's nothing to expect beyond action and a simplistic story.

reply

Besides, the story is told entirely in the trailers. It's another GitS

A lot of youtube reviewers who are savvy with manga seems to like/love it.

Lets hope it won't be a Dredd 3D.

According to this it's expected to lose a shitload of money:

Cameron can take the hit, bit this won't be good for Rodriguez.

reply

He'll just do another Spy Kids and be back in business.

I fear its going to be way too generic to make a profit for its budget. A movie like this has to add something extra since it doesn't have much else to say or do that hasn't been done a dozen times in the last year of film. It doesn't have brand recognition. Its not a sequel. So it basically has no hype. All it has going for it is itself and it seems like Rodriguez has bet too much on its rollerball angle. If it doesn't offer anything special then at best it breaks even and at worst its another Mortal Engines.

reply

Its still fresh though and everyone agrees it looks fantastic. Alita as a character is awesome and the action is fast and hard hitting. I think the negatives are put off by the open ending. But yeah I dont mind personally. I mean lord of the rings, also based on literature, also had an open ending. Nobody cared back than. Of course the problem is they have to make money to make the sequals and finish the story. I think the box office will be saved by young women and Asian markets.

reply

When I made this thread, it was not Fresh. It was more like 36%.

Regarding the box office, yeah, we'll see. I hope that it does well, but I know analysts think it's going to fail dramatically. I think this will be one where international box office will be very important. China to the rescue again? I guess time will tell.

reply

The critics are all saying that the film is going to lose money. Movie fans however are giving positive reviews and I am more inclined to trust their opinion. When listening to the critics it almost seems like they sit around a big table and share notes. Most all of them agree on a couple of things, they say the story is clunky BUT it is an entertaining film. I may be wrong in the end, but I just don’t see their logic. Entertainment is the foundation of a films success, but maybe the critics have forgotten that or so it would seem.

reply

It's not the critics saying the film will lose money, it's box office analysis firms. Their whole business is tracking films and predicting how much money films are going to make before they're even released.

Occasionally they get it wrong, but for the most part they are shockingly good at their job. And they are saying that Alita is tracking to lose a lot of money.

From a recent article:

Two weeks away from its Feb. 14 U.S. release, “Alita: Battle Angel” is estimated by independent trackers to post a five-day opening of no more than $25 million against a production budget that has been reported to be between $150 million and $200 million. Analysts have told TheWrap they estimate the James Cameron-written/Robert Rodriguez-directed film will have a final domestic total of $45-50 million.

reply

Any idea why the analysts are posting these predictions, aren’t they influenced a little by the critics. Could they be basing these predictions on similar type films that have failed in the past?

reply

I don't know their methods. It's something I've always wondered about. I'm sure there are several different factors involved, including polling moviegoers to gauge interest in the film.

What I can tell you is that it's amazing how close their predictions tend to be. On only a few occasions have I seen them get it really wrong.

Considering $150-$200 million is just the production budget and doesn't include marketing costs, and considering that studios split ticket revenue with exhibitors, well, basically Alita is going to need a miracle to turn a profit theatrically.

But hey, I intend to go see it so they'll at least get my $10.

reply

My plans were to see the film opening night, but my theater of choice is not showing the 3D version until Sunday. Guess I’ll have to wait a couple more days, anyway I hope you enjoy it!!!

reply

If you're a fan, fuck reviews and see it anyway, which is what I am doing. I'll form my own judgments. If you aren't a fan, then yeah, reviews are the ticker.
