Jennifer Hudson= blah!

I know her fans will be pissed, but it must be said: Hudson did NOT deserve any of the (acting) awards she recieved for the movie. An Oscar? Are you freakin' kidding me? A grammy, sure, but leave the Oscar to the pro's. She does some awesome singing in the movie, but that's it. No great acting, no great line readings, no real character development. She depends on her singing to cover up her poor acting through the entire duration of the movie. When she is not singing, she may as well not even be there. One of the least deserving Oscar wins in history.

I wholeheartedly disagree, her performance made me a fan because I didn't care for her on AI. But I was knocked out by her and it's obvious I wasn't alone in my thinking. She was funny, dramatic and absolutely gut-wrenching not only during her singing (which was phenomenal) but also her joke delivery, her emotive eyes and face and of course her acting chops during one that triumphant performance on that stage recorded for the screen. She made a connection throughout the whole film to the entire audiance during my several visits to the multiplex to see this movie. I thought Jennifer's Effie White is not only a character and performance for the ages but a real testament to truly pursuing your dreams and never letting anyone or anything stand in the way.

It's your opinion of course and this was mine.

Who really cares anymore?

reply

Well I care. As long as there's prejudice in the world which there will always be, we need to stop being so complacent and celebrate this character as someone said, she is all about letting nothing stop you. Look at Susan Boyle. The prejudices she had to face and will still have to. The world is full of Britney Spears and Megan Foxes who are talented and work hard but are given the time of day over people don't look like that. Talk about not caring when there are as many people like Susan Boyle in the public eye as there are these little starlets. Until then, we shouldn't stop caring.

She was so so good...like freakin' amazing...but that's just my opinion.

reply

Wow. What an immature thread title. Maybe you should try to express your opinions with a little more maturity and then I'll take you seriously.

Shut will you, why do you even bother commenting.

"Ahhh!...and boom goes the dynamite."

I thought Effie's character was so obnoxious... Whiny, bitchy, mean. She was ruining the experience for everyone. Her voice may be great but I can't stand it... To me it seems too shrill and annoying. I'm like, "shut up already". Beyonce's voice is much softer and pleasant. But I'm glad Jennifer got the award instead of Beyonce.

reply

LMAO I definitely agree! she is blah! I didn;t see where she was so great, her acting skills are mediocre as well! she SUCKED IN SEX AND THE CITY! Her voice is what got her that Oscar and the money that the studio paid, to get her that oscar.

I agree. I even felt that her voice was too irritating to my ears.

Beyonce- Been That Number One Diva In This Game For A Minute

I completely agree with the original post!

Yea I agree MovieMania7. I couldn't believe she won the Oscar to. She wasn't THAT GREAT SERIOUSLY. Tons of GREAT ACTRESSES THAT HAVE BEEN ACTING LONGER AND ARE BETTER(ACTING WISE) AND HAVEN'T WON NOT ONE OSCAR BUT SHE WINS ONE ON HER FIRST TRY, WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN ON AMERICAN IDOL BUT CAN WIN A PRIZE(Oscar) THAT TAKES SOME PEOPLE A VERY LONG TIME TO ACHIEVE. PLZ. Then people say because of her singing she won the award, wow, she didnt wooo any one at American Idol, but all of a sudden in this movie she is superb. LOL. She wasn't great acting wise in the movie. I agree. Some of the Awards given today are not for the loyal, pure n the talented. Sad. She proved how great of a actress she was in Sex in the City movie huh. LOL. Not great in that movie at all. LOL. And her music CD wasn't good either. No disrespect to her fans as I respect them. This is my opinion.

As a famous phrase goes "Only in America, ONLY IN AMERICA".

Yeah.....does that change that fact that the Oscar is still sitting in her house, and it STILL belongs to her, and no one else???

No, and it won't, so stop complaining about it, perhaps become a movie star yourself, and TRY to do a better job and get one of your own, and then we can listen to other people whine about how much you didn't deserve it.

This time, Effie White's gonna win.

Whitney was wrong. Children are no longer the future.

reply

Of course she's the worst actress to ever win an Oscar. But like I've said right from the beginning, her subsequent acting career will be the true evidence of what acting talent she has. And I was proved right so far. I'm glad she won the Grammy but she has very limited acting ability.

Six inches is perfectly adequate. More is vulgar

I was watching this film when I remembered that it won a couple of Oscars. Was really stunned that Hudson got the highest acting award because there is no acting. Best song maybe but singing is not acting! There is a reason other awards put musicals in a separate category.

The Oscars have been a joke for many years & this just confirms it.

p.s. is the singing really that good? surely it has been "refined" in the studio?

reply

So, you think she stopped acting when she opened her mouth to sing?

reply

The award has never been for "Best Actor/Actress in a Leading/Supporting Role," it's "Best PERFORMANCE..." Jennifer Hudson gave us a performance, did she not? It's possible to act while singing which is why other actors in the past have won awards for a musical film. Bringing emotion, charm, wit and heart into a song and not just singing it deadpan enhances a musical performance.

Right on!

Someone from the outside gets it.

I'M SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

That is certainly news to me...I checked the official Oscar site to be sure...It clearly says "Actress in a Supporting Role". You must be thinking of the SAG Awards.

I think that is rather harsh statement about the character development she could only act out what was given to her. She didn't write the movie. I could get into a whole other discussion about that. Loosley based on the Supremes. The movie could have been much more. I think there several legal reasons why the movie didn't develop more and why some parts were accurate and than some were fictious.

I wasn't nearly as critical of the Effie character since Beyonce played Deena. I just don't think Beyonce is that great of an actress. Having said that I still loved Dreamgirls. Jennifer wasn't great but she was good and her singing was awesome. This was also her first movie. In The Secret Life of Bees she brought life to the character Rosaleen and was really great in it. That is also a great read by the way.

I love Anika Noni Rose in all her stuff.
