Regaining it's footing on Tuesday. Largest bump of the top ten

...films(outside of Little).

It took a hit this past weekend but he has gotten up...dusted himself off...and set his sights back on a domestic total over 160 million.

Nice recovery, WB!

reply

i'm not trying to be bb jr, but this is just silly.

shazam is down 66.8% from last tuesday.

it did indeed bump up nicely over monday's numbers, but it still only grossed $552k tuesday. and its monday gross was 80% off of its previous monday's gross, so that tuesday increase was really just a mild bounce from an abnormally weak monday.

with those kinds of week to week declines, given the fact that it's currently at $132m, and that there are new releases coming up over the coming weeks that will kick it out of the first run theatres, along with the lot of screens going to endgame....

i liked shazam quite a bit. it's a fun, good-natured, really enjoyable film.

but there is no way it's going to make another $28m.
that is absolutely not going to happen.

you have got to try harder.

reply

Nice recovery ? are you kidding , its made 378 million , im sure they were expecting near 600 million , this has flopped , no doubt about it

reply

Thats pretty good for a $100m dollar budget. The break even was $250m.

reply

Please provide evidence of this

reply

the general rule is that a film needs 3x its budget to make it into the black. if shazam had a $100m budget, which is at the high end of the estimates i've heard, then it's probably a profitable movie.

no doubt the studio hoped for more, but it's really not fair to call it a flop. it did fine. it's a modest movie, and it received a nice if not overwhelming response.

flops are things like serenity from this year, that apparently cost $25m and won't make 1/2 of that probably. that's not too good.

shazam isn't setting the world on fire, but it shouldn't ruin anyone's career.

No evidence found, please provide balance sheet for shazam, please provide evidence

Wait until DVD/Blu-ray/Streaming sales, many movies have made millions more that way.

reply

Except the author of this thread will inform you that those ancillary revenue streams are not relevant when it comes to film profitability.

reply

"The Shawshank Redemption" was an utter FLOP in cinemas, and yet it turned out to be one of THE most popular movies ever since then. Tell QueenFanUSA that and see how they react.

reply

This thread is obviously just bait for BB.

reply

At this rate, it may even come close to breaking even.

Time will tell...

reply

It already has broken even.

reply

It's close. Another 15 million will put it at break even and then every penny after that is pure profit, baby. This thing could make hundreds!

reply

Let's look at the numbers:

Cost to make the film: $100 million
Cost to promote the film: at least $100 million more

Bare minimum needed to break even: $200 million

Domestic box office: $133 million, 60% of that goes to the studio = $80 million
International box office: $214 million, approx. 30% of that goes to the studio = $64 million

Let's be super generous and assume Shazam somehow kept 40% of their international box office, which would be $85.6 million. We'll round up to $87 million. It STILL needs to make $33 million more in profit to break even. At this point, I don't think it will make that much more, especially when you remember that isn't $33 million more in box office revenue that it needs, but $33 million in profit.

Another flop. :/

reply

Every site(other than box office mojo) pegs the production budget at 80 or 90 million...NOT 100 million so it's already broke even.

reply

If you just would google Shazam!'s Production Budget you would find that the answer you gave isn't actually accurate. Now I'm not saying that all sites are sourced from the same source or should be but $100 Million does come up. :-)

And it isn't just Box Office Mojo.

What does Deadline say?

Of all things What does Wikipedia Say?

What would Jesus Do? Oh, scratch that one off the list.

Hmmmmm, no such accolade for Captain Marvel? Didn't that movie see a nice recovery also? I mean Box Office is your thing and you have a certain fascination with Marvel/Disney don't you?

How about the fact that Shazam! is no longer in the top five and Captain Marvel has risen back into the top five even though there are new releases this week?

No love for Captain Marvel's box office performance?

reply

I love following box office reporting.

Shazam had taken a rough hit the weekend before so it was a true "recovery" on Tuesday. CM had a stronger hold that weekend so there was no point in talking about a "recovery" for it on Tuesday.

reply

Shazam was marketed to too young of an audience. They should just go for teens and young adults. Kids will still want to see it.

The Box Office performance for Captain Marvel has some interesting events that you would think that you would be following as they are being reported on:

Back into the Top 5
Comparison against WW daily performance
Long coattails of Avengers movies (Either lead into a film and or following a release)

Roadmaps and or examples for other studios, counter programming, release schedules?

How to create legs or sustain revenue.

We know you have no interest in multiple revenue streams for IPs and how Box Office is affected.
