Searl desperately asking Kaneda! What do you see?! What do you see?

What an epic scene that was, i had tears well up in my eyes, because i know something about being fascinated by the light of the Sun.

"For Searle and, to a lesser extent, Kaneda (Hiroyuki Sanada), salvation/enlightenment is achieved by “touching” the Sun. Searle demonstrates this conceit through his fascination with seeing as much light as he can. When Kaneda sacrifices himself to the Sun’s rays for the good of the mission, he turns towards the approaching wall of searing heat that will destroy him. At the moment of his death, Kaneda is calm, humble and seemingly embracing the great power that consumes him. Searle is intensely curious, repeatedly asking Kaneda over the radio “What do you see?” What Kaneda sees is his death, his eternal darkness, in the midst of light. What can you see when the retinas are overloaded by light? Too much light is ultimately blindness, while in the midst of darkness one heads for light. This paradox again reflects the film’s spiritual journey, a journey simultaneously into light and darkness."

Agree. This obsession of power and beauty mankind has... it's kind of a great metaphofical vision of it.

Absolutely incredible. Just one of many incredibly powerful scenes in this film.

If you're really paying attention to this movie, you should have tears streaming down your face through a *lot* of it.

The film deserved a lot better. It is a magnificent film. Agree with you, glad to see many people like us do.

I agree with everyone here, it's an enormous, extremely intense scene that makes me overflow with emotion each time. It's interesting that in their audio commentaries both D.Boyle as well as scientist Dr. Brian Cox recount what a special moment this was from Hiroyuki Sanada, that he gave everything in this moment and everyone who was there that day was completely captivated by his performance. And you feel this, even though his face inside the helmet is distorted and blurred there's such an intense energy, and together with the sounds and the music and the whole thing that's happening there...woah.

Yes, Hiroyuke Sanada did a great job. BTW, did you know that he was in the first season of the SyFy channel series Helix?

Wow, that's a different take on that moment - emotionally at least - than I experienced. Thank you for sharing. It makes me contemplate that scene in an entirely different manner.

My initial emotion was angry hope that another crew member would open an airlock and shove Searle out of it, since his blather is one of the reasons Kaneda was about to die.
