Science didn't save the day in this movie, but faith and perseverance did. It was the scientist (or one of the four scientists aboard Icarus II) who threw the mission off course in the first place.

Science didn't save the day in this movie, but faith and perseverance did.Not only that, if they would have had faith in their mission in the first place, they never would have met with Icarus I in order to get a 'second chance'. So with more faith they'd probably have completed the mission without any problems and even gotten back to earth.

The common people back on Earth (such as Capa's sister and her kids) were asked to not panic, not break into riots etc., but instead to hang on and have faith that the Sun wouldn't burn out. And their faith got rewarded.
(There's arguably no point in trying to re-ignite the Sun if human civilization on Earth was going to completely fall apart due to mass-hysteria anyway before Icarus would reach its destination.)
