To those who think McAvoy portrayed Garrigan poorly...

You are off the mark, in my opinion. James mcAvoy elevates any film he is in. It is almost unfathomable to me that he is the same guy who played Wesley, in the film "Wanted," with scarcely a trace of his thick Scottish lilt. I'm convinced he's faking his Scot accent in interviews after seeing him as an American in that and "Penelope" lol jk... Robbie in "Atonement," Tom LeFroy in "Becoming Jane?" I can't connect that they are all played by him. He embodies his characters completely. Want to see what a true artist is? Look him up on youtube in the BBC's "ShakespeaRe-Told: MacBeth." Unreal!!!

Having said that: I agree with what others have said... It's made clear that he enjoys the ladies in the OPENING CREDITS! And Garrigan and Amin themselves have a talk about married women being more passionate early in the film... that, and he came onto Sarah. He is supposed to be young, foolish, and egoistic. How could a mature dr, and someone of integrity have been so brainwashed by Amin??? We finally start to see that he has a conscience later in the film, but he is supposed to be a "wanker" and get caught up in the self importance Amin made him feel by stroking his ego. A more mature and morally strong man might not have ever fallen victim to it, and would have stayed in with the mission!

McAvoy is sensational. Love this movie, disturbing as it is, and love his acting. It never feels like he is acting... it feels real.

I SO have to agree with everything u said. The man's painfully good and I can't think of anyone equal.

Might I have your first name, Mr. Head, and tell me it isn't Dick.

James is a very intense actor, indeed!
Hes not the best actor ever, but hes gonna have a bright future!
Im pretty sure he will win some awards in the near future, just wait and see!

I totally agree. I thought he was amazing in this ilm, and have never seen him in anything where he doesn't completely steal the spotlight with his compelling performance. I personally thought he should have won an award for this film over Forrest Whitaker, but that's me!

I agree with you completely. I think McAvoy is one of the most talented and most brilliant young actors of today. I really enjoy his performances!

Totally agree with the OP. James McAvoy is the best actor of his generation, and one of the greatest things about him is that he's ego-free. He's the kind of actor who never chews scenery - he shines quietly if he has too, and allows the other actors to steal the show, if he believes it's the best for the film. I think this is amazing; his modesty as an actor is quite rare.

James is in the business because he loves telling stories, he loves the whole process of making a film, he loves being an actor - not being a star.

I don;t think McAvoy is great in ever film, but he and Whitaker certainly had their greatest outing in this film. Their characterisations were second to none - Whitaker's Amin was well worthy of the awards, its just as shame they couldn't find something for McAvoy from this movie ... great performances in an all round superb movie

I don't know what it is, but its weird and pissed off!

James McAvoy is a fine actor. His performance in this movie is good, but I am not sure if his character was necessary to the story. I think the story could have been told without a fictional character as one of the leading characters. But that's just me.

McAvoy was brilliant in this film. I've never seen him in anything else but I'll make a point of doing so now. His performance was also award-worthy.
