i love Bren

she is an awesome step mom

Most of the time; she was idiotically over the top with the ultra-sound woman and over-reacted to Juno seeing Mark. Other than that though, she was pretty cool, very calm with Juno's situation.

reply

The ultra sound lady unnecessary insulted Juno so she was right to defend her and she was right that Juno spending alone time with Mark was inappropriate.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

Yep. In fact, the scenes were acted out perfectly by her. Especially the second one.

reply

And she went way over the top in return to the ultra-sound woman's comment, coming off as ignorant and uneducated. She also over-reacted with Juno going to visit them, as she never intended to see Mark alone; the woman should have gotten a freaking grip.

reply

In what way was she ignorant and uneducated? Can you tell me what the difference you see in those two words or did you think it made a stronger point to use synonyms for the same point?

Obviously they're different words, but they both fit. She made that completely bogus statement about how the technician should get a "real" job, when it takes college courses and a lot of technical knowledge to be an ultrasound technician; it sounded even worse when she called it "drawing pictures". Made her sound completely stupid and full of just hot air.

Whitespirit26...

Perhaps Brenda did not choose the same words you would have chosen to respond to the Ultrasound Tech, but let's be clear here... the tech stated, in no uncertain terms, that "a baby being raised by a teen is in a poisonous environment." Do you seriously think that any mother/stepmother worth their salt would sit there and allow someone to be so utterly disrespectful and condescending as to suggest that if their daughter's choice had been to keep her child that the environment would have been poisonous? Wow... Seriously? I would hope any mother, smooth talking or not, would have their daughter's back against such an unprofessional, completely out of line, hospital tech. Had it happened in "the real world", that tech would have been dismissed from her position faster than you could say, "Bye-Bye"! I'm amazed that anyone would choose to put the emphasis on how Brenda sounded ("uneducated and ignorant"), vs. the fact that she immediately supported her stepdaughter who'd been blatantly insulted by someone in no position to do such a thing.

As to Brenda "over-reacting" regarding Juno being naïve about the boundaries of marriage and her lack of understanding that "hanging out with Mark" is simply not acceptable... Brenda was spot on! This was made painfully evident when Mark revealed to Juno that he thought she'd be "cool" about his plan to leave Vanessa and have his own place in the city. Mark completely got the wrong vibe from Juno visiting and hanging out "as friends", which was exactly what Brenda was attempting to warn Juno about. I'd say she didn't "over-react" enough!

reply

Yes she did overreact, because most married men expecting babies do NOT HIT ON THE TEENAGE BIRTH MOTHERS just because they happen to stop by to show them the image of their future child. If Juno had gone over always intending to spend time with him, I'd totally agree, but she was an innocent and Bren could have given her a speech without being such a stick-up-the-butt patronizing pain about it, and that was just her problem; she often overshot and ended up defeating her purpose.

"I'm amazed that anyone would choose to put the emphasis on how Brenda sounded ("uneducated and ignorant")"

There's a thing, again, about over-stepping and reacting. Bren had already grilled the tech before she made those stupid comments and there used to be a whole thread debating this. Of course she should have spoken up, and she did, then kept going into idiocy. That scene should have cut as soon as she said, "Maybe we should both stick to what we know." Yes, great advice, because she then ventured into what she knew nothing about and destroyed the whole affect the scene had had; she went so far overboard she even insulted her own little girl. It got ridiculous and Juno's silly statement, "You's a dick, I LOVE it" just punctuated the low class nonsense.

reply

I understand much better where you're coming from with your additional comments, and your point about where Brenda's response to the tech could have ended makes sense. I'm not sure I feel the same about the response to her visit with Mark, especially after she pointed out to Brenda that she spent a few hours there watching movies, and then mentioning the CD's that Mark made for her. Those added comments most likely heightened her concern, and of course, Juno's rather disrespectful comments to "Bren-DA" also ticked her off, escalating the issue even more.

reply

Thank you for reading and listening :) I'd realized after my second to last response I hadn't explained the why of exactly what bothered me, possibly confusing it with the longer thread. I didn't think bringing the photo was a mistake, but it was a mistake for Juno to watch films with Mark so carelessly; she was so frank and open and wanted to know the adoptive parents more that it never occurred to her, and I just thought Bren could have explained a little better. J went too far as well in her defense, but I couldn't help finding her "Dream BIG!" comment funny. And the naughty use of Bren's urn..

I love Bren, too, and you can tell she really loves Juno. The ultrasound tech had no place to say what she did, and Mark just hanging out with Juno was completely inappropriate. I think Bren was spot on in both scenes. I also love the last scene with her watching Vanessa look at and hold the baby :-)

reply

People, including Juno, react better when they're not spoken down to.
