My Conspiracy Theories

Take these with a grain of salt. I understand this is, most likely, just a dark humor horror about a dysfunctional family coming together through their faults and still failing. Then moving on. (Pretty metal, brah)

I'll be ignorant and throw some fuel on the fire (pun intended).

What if the main character never woke up at the register? What if he never even had this family and that's why even the "touching" scenes are so comical? What if in his mind he can't create the scenario accurately because he's never experienced it? Could be paranoid and dreaming of a monster and that's why he's watching out over a calm winter night with a gun. Hints of schizophrenia where he sees the daughter eating with the family. Perhaps the American surgeon's interest in penetrating his frontal lobe is an allusion to his paranoia and why he says there is no virus. The father also says he wasn't always "there" in the head.

Time for a another huuuuge stretch! Another thought to entertain that relies on my previous suggestions is that maybe in the end, he's the little boy. The main character grew up without a mother, the dad was always out, and he'd have to find his own food in the stand. He's actually just a little boy, with a wild imagination, sleeping in a food stand while his father is out and a creeping suspicion that something scary might be out there. After all, he does wake up in a completely different season and everything is fine and he eats dinner alone (if you humor my previous suggestions). It seems plausible that they're the only two of the main cast who survived the incident.

However, I can't dispute the fact that there are pictures of the family on the walls after the incident.

My fun conspiracy theory of the night. I just watched this movie for the first time about an hour ago, so my apologies if my writing is a bit aloof. I welcome thoughts or rebuttals, as I can appreciate the movie either way. Anyhow, Occam's Razor will tell you that the movie "is what it is," if that's your style. Thanks!
