I'm persian / let me tell you something

All the persians are white ... not like the crap 300 ...it was all lie .

about prince himself : i think he is half persian ... the blue or green eyes!!! maybe 10% of persians have colored eyes .

about casting : golshifte farahani was one of the choises for Tamina .. but because of the leaders of our country ( that i realy realy hate )... she was not allowed to leave so they gave it to Gemma Arterton .

Ben kingsley played a persian Character in ( house of sands and fog ) ... so i think the best choise for Nizam .

Alfred Molina ... has a persian face ... so another smart choise .

and Jake Gyllenhaal exacly like a half persian . please don't say about bad casting .

i do not saw the film yet . as some of you know ... in iran ... we dont have ( copy right) so i must waite for good Quality .. and download it .

last Tip : some maybe say about ... wooowww persians are heroes ... and americans made a film that show them in good Perspective ...and .....

the truth is every man in this F...ing planet . are all like the same . so i dont care about i'm persian ... or i have a good history and that *beep* . i just want a good life ...

SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH

reply

I tottaly agree with you man.

100%

It doesn't matter where you are from, or what color are you.
In my Opinion if the ancient greeks could dress up as women and play female roles, and if English actors could paint themselves black with chocolate in order to play Othelo,It is tottaly right for anyone to play any role.
So they are not persians. Why should anyone cares? It is just a movie with ACTORS. It is NOT real...

But you know, no one ever complained when Franco Jefirely casted a blonde, blue eyed man as Jesus (who should be according to genetics black haired, and brown eyed, not to mention a litlle darker) , but if you place an American to play a Persian, a scandal will occur.

It is called Acting for a reason people. Get OVER IT!

Don't be sorry for your English, apologise for the constant unnecessary use of the elipsis.
GOOD POST though.

No, Blackface isn't "totally right".

reply

yeah that's a bit too extreme, i mean Tropic Thunder only used it for humor, just like Eddie Murphy just did the reverse for humor.

but a white guy getting a tan to look indian/middle eastern/hispanic isn't quite the same extreme...

reply

I think you meant: "Eddie Murphy just did the reverse of humor."

reply

Lol

Very good, Louis. Short, but pointless.

Thanks for that info, it's nice to see feedback from someone more familiar with the locale than most of these responses.

I dont think it's accurate to say that all Persians are white -- if anything, they're very mixed whites (they're certainly not like Anglo-Saxons!), and the complexion of people in Iran differs depending on which region of the country you visit. I would say that they're closest to Mediterranean whites (Greeks in particular), but still there are slight differences.

reply

sure ... most of us ... have brwon skins. in ( bandar abas ) ... all of the people ... have dark brwon skins . becuase of the sun .
but we dont have any black people . and i'm not saying it's good . i'm just saying it .

reply

I'm sure it's more than just the sun; considering the proximity of India and Pakistan to Bandar-Abbas, I dont think it'd be inaccurate to say that historically there were probable mixtures with people migrating from the east of the Indus.

reply

"More than just sun"? Exposure to the suns' radiation is one of the leading causes of alteration to skin pigmentation. Granted, there are other contributors, sun exposure and temperature would still be the cause, at the very least indirectly.

And sorry, I know this is an old post but I couldn't help but reply to this.

reply

Since the Persian empire at the time of Xerxes extended into Africa, the Persian emissary from 300 could have been from Egypt or thereabouts.

reply

True, I'm dominican (down in the Caribbean) and most people think we are all black. Half of the population is black, the other white and most of us are mixed... others were born white but because of the Caribbean sun their skin turns darker and darker. But still, we all share the same latin culture.

Remember, remember the 5th of November - V

reply

Most think you're (Dominicans) black because...most of you for the most part....are.

What's more dangerous than sincere ignorance?

reply

Oh, thank you for educating me about my culture and my country.

i sort of knew everything you said but it's nice to have it confirmed, and it's nice to meet a "persian". oh, and don't worry. where i come from, we have to wait for "good prints" too. well not everyone waits for a good one, but i do...
the theatres here (the very few we have that show english movies) have lame and rather old (2-3 years) movies that are really dumbed down and censored thanks to our unnecessarily conservative and backwards minded leaders. yes, we're muslim, in case you were wondering. what's the point in censoring it when i can download it on the net or buy the dvd from any one of literally hundreds of DVD stores that sell everything from Quran recitals to regular movies/music porn in the same store...
laziest guy on God's good earth? ME!

reply

agreed my friend, hollywood tends to play with stereotypes which is a shame. good to hear some good facts about persia.

dont worry about 300...its basically a comic book of little importance.

majidleave, did you see ridley scott's 'Kingdom of Heaven'? what did you think of that film? i dont know how accurate it is but it was nice to see a film that had elements of east vs west getting along, well at the beginning and end of the film anyway.

have a good day majidleave

reply

Well if you call Iran Persia in its cuurent state, i'm sorry to see what Persia has become my friend.

reply

my opinion about KOH is 50/50

i think the movie is 50 good about christians and 50 good about muslims . but i think lots of muslims are angry about that film .
and the truth is I dont care

real persia was not a islamic republic . but after ( safavie ) ... islam entered to our country for 2000 or 3000 years . Real persia is not exist anymore . and it's all islam .

i respect for every Religion ... but i think all the religions is like prison that hold you . and you can not see it .

last tip : i love south park . and i realy wish to see the last censored episod .

reply

OK, I am Persian too. I liked the choices for people in this movie, because Jake Gyllenhal kinda does look like a Persian if you go about Iran, i usually go to Shiraz a lot and they look similar. People have the same features and bone structure on their face. The only thing that really bugged me about this movie is that they had English accents...that was very annoying, couldn't they have tried to put on a Persian accent? Ben Kingsley did a great job with that in House of sand and fog. Although, it was a fun movie to watch. I enjoyed it.

I haven't seen Kingdom of Heaven yet, but i would one day because i really like Ridley Scott... and by the way, many Americans seem to think Persians are Arabs, well, big surprise! we are not. And we don't speak Arabic, we speak Farsi.

I love Iran, most of the people there are secular and nice :) but the government are the real *beep* :)

WARNING: I'M SEXY!

reply

How would Persians speaking English with a Persian accent make sense?

reply

you mean the iranian actors who live in US .
maybe shohre aghdashlo ...
but i think all of them cast as iranan or arabian character . OR indian !!!

reply

Don't worry, sooner or later the Ayatolla will fall, and with him so will the entire Islamic "Republic" (truly, it should be 'Dictatorship"). And when that happens, let's hope that the country will be delivered to responsible politicians, who will actually grant power to their people.

reply

we all are looking forward to that day.

reply

weji, that has always annoyed me as well, regarding English accents. Watch any movie depicting the ancient world (Gladiator, 300, Rome, Alexander, and yes, Kingdom of Heaven) and you'll find all the actors speak with English accents, some poorly (see Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator). I've always wondered why, in movies depicting ancient Rome, the actors don't speak with Italian accents.

We grow up with these preconceived notions of what the typical Greek or Roman citizen looked and sounded like from movies and art, yet we tend to overlook the fact that the Greek, Roman and Persian empires at their heights spanned multiple continents and millions of square miles. Such proliferation is always bound to foster significant cultural diversity.

To add to your comment on Persian/Arab confusion, what disturbs me the most is that, statistically, most Americans probably don't even know that the heart of the Persian Empire was located in modern-day Iran. It's a shame.

reply

"The only thing that really bugged me about this movie is that they had English accents...that was very annoying, couldn't they have tried to put on a Persian accent?"

What? No no. That would emphasize on language and therefore ruin the illusion. It would cement the fact that it's in character, making everyone Persians trying to speak English, which doesn't make sense. Never do that.

Language never being given any importance in the movie effectively made it a non-issue. Or so I thought.

Just to note, Kingdom of Heaven was amazing in that aspect. One of the lines in the film talked about how the Islamic prayers sounded like the Christian prayers, which was a very nice way of telling the audience, 'Hey, maybe we're all worshipping the same God!'

reply

Lol, when in the film did they say that?

I just remember Balian inquiring about a bunch of Muslims who were praying on the beach in Messina, and he said that their prayers "sound like operas".

reply

No, he said,'what is that they are saying?'
Other guy: God is great, and it is right to praise him.
Balian: Sounds like our prayers.

reply

You do know that Leonidas and the 300 actually existed right? Not in the way the comic book showed them.. but its based on a true story

reply

I do agree partially with you, majidleave, but I think the whole upset is among the fans of the games like myself for example. It's true that Persians are lighter skinned (and I'm aware that Arabs and Persians are different) but Gyllenhaal isn't the actor I think of when i see the prince (What I mean is, the prince is hot, Jake is boyish), and not to mention the storyline for the movie isn't like the game, which kind of upsets me and others. Frankly, gamers are sick of Hollywood creating video game based movies and screwing them up and making it seem they didn't even research the game's content, or in other words not giving the fans what they want. It's equivalent to movies being adapted from a bestselling book and not following its story (like the ending to My Sister's Keeper).
As for Gemma Arteron, she's an ok choice to play a Persian, but what the whole buzz is about is the gaming crowd because in the Sands of Time GAME, the princess was Indian, so there's still some confusion as to where this princess in the movie comes from.
And many are talking about their British accents. HELLO? Apparently these squares have never played the games! I'm just curious as to how many people are on this board who have never played a POP game in their life.
But for now we shouldn't be so critical until all of us have actually seen the film.
PS: If this movie had a more mature undertone, I would've voted for Oded Fehr for the role of the prince (especially if this was based on Warrior Within). :)

As for the POP movie, I'm getting even more hopeful about it based on all these positive reviews so far.
