Poor Marketing, Missleading Trailer

I watched this out of curiosity on hulu, and I must say, the trailers did not match the movie. I remember when it was advertised, and though I didn't know any Nancy Drew materials, I knew of her and how she was a child detective. The trailers made it seem like this was going to be a "quirky fish out of water, what happened to Nancy after she stopped" movie. I did not realize it was going to be a mystery movie, with actual stakes and what not. The trailer was all pulled from the scenes that were "I'm Nancy, and I'm different, and here's a party scene." There was nothing about the mystery she was trying to solve. Do you think it would have performed better if it was marketed accurately?

I just rewatched the trailer and you're partly right. Most of the trailer was about her about her being different. There was a small part of it that showed her working on the case.

In my opinion it didn't do very well for other reasons. Mostly because it didn't follow very well with the Nancy Drew books. I was 11 at the time of movie coming out and going through my big ND phrase. I liked this movie but I can see how it didn't quite live up to its audience.

It went in the direction of being a kid/teenage movie. So the script wasn't great and the characters not the best they could've been. Plus the directing didn't have the actors live up to their potential. They went with a modern day but still wanted her to have the 50s/60s style and old detective ways. So they made her quirky.

In the books she's a 19 years old, smart, pretty, popular, and very loved.

In my opinion they totally went off the rails with every character (like Ned isn't suppose to be needy, clingy, or overall pathetic).

They completely lost the whole book audience. I hope one day they do another ND movie. I would prefer it to take place in the 50s with an older Nancy. But I would settle for a better modern day one.
