Steve Carell should do serious films as well

The thing with Steve Carell is that he can probably do well in a serious film as well. This is evident from the two films 'Little Miss Sunshine' and 'Dan in Real Life', even though they ARE comedy films but they are not your regular Judd Apatow laugh-out-loud comedy films [well at least Dan in Real Life is not], so in these films, his character is not like his character Andy from '40 year old Virgin'. Films like 'Get Smart' and '40 year old virgin', in other words just comedy is getting repetitive, he should get roles in serious films as well.

I totally agree. I thought he was really good in this film and LMS, and though I also think he's fantastic in comedies, I think serious films suit his real life personality more. It's great to see one of his more serious films every now and then among all the comedies he does. IMO he has such potential to do really good dramas, the type that leads to accolades, if ever the right role came around.

Yes Screen Queen, I hope some director will give him a role which is a serious one and central to the plot. That will be worth watching.

I actually consider "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Dan in Real Life" to be serious roles for Carell, because they are. The films may have had comedic elements, but the object of Carell's roles was not to be funny. I definitely agree that Carell's serious side is superb and actually fits him a lot better than his comedic side (as funny as he may be).

Isn't it ironic? I remember the first time I saw Robin Williams in a serious role, I never, ever viewed him as a funnyman after that. Its like these guys who are known for their comedy are even better at being serious. Carell is the same way, after I saw him in "Little Miss Sunshine," I never quite viewed him as the laugh-out-loud funny guy he broke through with.

Not to mention Jim Carrey.

I like him much better in movies like Eternal Sunshine, Truman Show and Man on the Moon.

In some "The Office" episodes you can actually feel this duality in Steve's acting, he's like histerically funny yet has some great acting chops too. Another comedian that is less obvious about his talent is Adam Sandler, altough if you see Punch-Drunk Love, you will seriously be shocked at how good he actually is, it's just that being a good actor isn't that redituable for guys like this.

Steve pulls off 'serious' acting very well, several episodes of the Office can attest to this, in fact I would say it was instrumental to the success of the American version.

Amen to that. He just rocks in Office Series.

Another comedy/drama blend for Steve was Crazy. Stupid. Love.

Yes! He should play an evil character too in a dramatic role. In the episode of The Office called The Coup, I reckon we see a bit of a dark edge there I think could be explored.
