Why do people like this movie so much?

I watched it and despite the good performances from Grant and Barrymore, it was a real bore. Not much in terms of humor and ridiculously cheesy. Granted, it's not at all as bad as Failure To Launch or The Back-Up Plan, but it was definitely not a good movie.

This is why:

A man who can't write the song because he can't feel the feeling.

Grant & Barrymore melting reality and acting in their frail singing is historic, because that's what also happens to his Fletcher character.

And you have Spandau B & ABC lyrics wowen into it. Even if the darn americans take part credit for the new romantics.

Close to be as cool as Be Cool but lack the selfreferences.

Well, I think this is under rated so cant agree with your original post.

Barrymore was charming in this film, and Hugh Grant was, well Hugh Grant. On some of his films his character simply comes across as annoying, but in this movie his "affable idiot" persona works well.

Also loved the OTT sister played by Kristen Johnston.

All in all a film I love watching.

As to your critique of the other 2 films mentioned, I will have to agree with Failure to Launch, but no way will I say a bad thing about The Backup Plan as thought it a pleasant film (and what hetero male wouldn't want to get Jennifer Lopez naked?)

I always enjoy Hugh and Drew's movies. It's not either of their best, but it's fun. I love Sophie's sister she is a riot.

I agree Failure to Launch and Back Up Plan are bad despite the collective talent. Sorry to folks who like them. It's only my opinion.

Not laugh out loud funny, but the 80's references - and the way the movie started with POP!'s video - were fun. Both Grant and Barrymore are at their best in what they do, and I loved the music. "Way Back Into Love" is a song I would listen to and buy, and sometimes I watch "Cora's" video of the song on YouTube just to listen to it again.

I have to respectfully disagree. I didn't watch this movie looking for the next Citizen Kane. I love both Grant and Barrymore...grew up in the 80's. (To this day, I would totally have the same reaction to meeting any member of Duran Duran that Rhonda did!) It's a film I would describe as charming, and it had permanent residence on my DVR.

I agree Kiki!

If you are not from the 80s I can see ppl not liking it. But if you are from the 80s then the nostalgia just makes you feel good. The music video was pure comedy gold. And Cora is hot as freakin hell.
