Things that bothered me with this movie.....

1. The song lyrics. Cmon, the love autopsy, magic just might swtich lines were awful, and everyone thought they were brilliant. Seriously, who would write lyrics this cheesy. Same with POP Goes My Heart, as well as Alex's song to Sophie at the end. Catchy, perhaps, but lame. The only tolerable song was the one they wrote together, which I will say wasn't terrible.

2. The Cora character. Let me get this straight....she likes the song they wrote for her, said it was everything she was looking for, but then completely changes it up with her dancing Indian theme music to where you can't even hear the lyrics, and then, suddenly, grows a brain by the end.

3. Last but definitely not least, in the pop-up video during the credits, it mentions how the band PoP was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. HA.

Needless to say, this film insults viewer intelligence, let alone any REAL music lover's intelligence. The premise of the movie was decent, but they could have done a MUCH better job with it. Typical Hollywood garbage for the most part.

I see you watched the movie from the beginning all the way right through to the end, so I guess it can't have been too intolerable. :-)

I didn't think that these were negative points at all.

1) The song lyrics were hilarious! "PoP" and the song "POP Goes My Heart" was supposed to be a spoof of the sort of pop bands ~ in this case from the 80's ~ that were huge stars, and made a ton of money, with cheesy songs. It was also very effective as an annoying pop song, it still gets stuck in my head for days after I watch the movie!
It seemed obvious to me that PoP was based on WHAM ~ and while "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" was/is fun, (even for this "Real" music lover) it never intended to be poetry. When you look at some of their other songs ..."Careless Whisper: is a good example,

"I'm never gonna dance again,
Guilty feet have got no rhythm"

~ Talk about *cheesy* - the song was a major hit, and people took it seriously!

The song that Alex wrote for Sophie was also hysterically bad, (although I admit that I thought it was very endearing, and would have worked on me ~ once I stopped laughing. ) that was part of the point.

2) I don't think they even came close to suggesting that Cora had grown a brain by the end (There was that line about her thinking the Dalai Lama was actually a llama) and I agree that it seems as if Alex was able to convince her to sing it as originally written very easily ~ but having scenes of him begging her to change it back, in the days, hours or minutes leading up to the performance wouldn't have worked. I didn't mind the explanation that she agreed to do it to help him "win Sophie back" ~ suspension of disbelief is more important in Romantic Comedies and James Bond movies than most other films.

3) Although there are a few groups/people that I feel should never have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I completely agree with you that "PoP" being counted among that number is too much of a stretch, and just wouldn't happen!(Of course - if they ever induct "WHAM", I will take that back!)However I don't think they intended to insult Music - or anyone's intelligence by adding in that joke.

Face it, pop music as a genre, isn't likely to disappear anytime soon, and a LOT of it is cheesy. It does have it's place though ~ as a bit of (mostly) harmless fun.
...kind of like this movie. It wasn't aiming to win any Oscars, or pretending to be "high brow", or even a Musical ~ it was a Romantic Comedy that had some songs in it. Just like pop music, romantic comedies aren't really known to be deeply philosophical.

You know ~ I'm sure that we could find the lyrics to many, many "number one hits" that were even cheesier than the songs in this movie, simply by listening to the radio for a few hours, or looking through some of the lyric sites online! (It'd be fun to see what people came up with ...if anyone wants to take up the challenge! ;D )

There are two types of movies on cable; the good ones, and the ones that are on when you're home!
