Wasn't Henry VIII a big fat guy?

I enjoy the show, but I would have respected it a lot more if they at least tried to have the actor that played Henry put on some weight for the role, at least in the last season. Also, I'm a big fan of watching a movie, and seeing the occasional ass or boobs, but I think they overdid it in this show. If it had something to do with the story, that would have been fine, but it seems like they'd be into one aspect of the story, and then introduce some mindless *beep* in the middle of it.

yes, he did become very fat in middle age. But i suppose they wanted to keep the actor looking attractive for the ratings.

He was a pretty attractive young stud until his jousting injury that never healed. Then he started to indulge in food and that coupled with the lack of exercise contributed both to weight gain and a bad temper.

I know. in the beginning he was tall and thin, he was crowned king in 1509 at the age of 18, after his brother Arthur [lol: Katherine's first husband!] kicked the bucket. our henry here in the first episode looks accurate -- except for the 2007 hairdo, that is.

in 1515 he was still considered svelt and very handsome.
he was also a tidy eater and washed his hands frequently [even during meals].

it all started to go down hill when he got that sore on his leg. wouldn't heal, was always angry and infected. so with that he couldn't do much. so he would sit. and eat. and sit. and eat. so do that for four years and he gained twenty inches around his waist. [that is the KH8 we know].

what gets me is that he was supposed to be this big, buff, muscular, strong guy. not fat, in the beginning, but a big athlete. what we have here is a spindly little white boy.

he was like 6foot 2 and this guy playing him is like 5feet 10.

Reading the paper can really be depressing. Mr. Dithers fired Dagwood again.

It's all been done before time and time again. Why keep rehashing the same portrayals?

He starts out as young and attractive, though yeah. But, you know, premium channels and sex appeal

True. He was very attractive before Jane Seymour's death. When she died, he indulged himself in food. It was never-ending and the consequences were diabetes, obesity and heart problems.

Henry weighed in excess of four hundred pounds at the time of his death - your requested slavish attention to actuality might have cost Jonathan Rhys Meyers his life.

I came wondering the same thing. It was clever at the very end of season 2 that he digs into a huge meat pie with his hands. I thought that was going to show the start of his obesity but then season 3 was like "nah, let's keep showing him shirtless."
