Would Charles really have

called him Henry?. I know they were extremely close, but, he was still the King so shouldn't Charles have called him something more formal

reply

In public he'd certainly address him as Your Majesty.

But I happen to know that in private he actually called the king Lord Tummy Tubbington. 

reply

I noticed very early on in season one Charles would always call him Henry and just found it abit odd

In the second episode when Henry is wrestling the King of France and Charles is shouting "Come on Henry" infront of everyone and when Henry is celebrating the birth of his son and is in a room full of people - where even Katherine of Aragon appears - and Charles shouts "Congratulations Henry".

Now I know were extremely close, but, he was still the King

reply

The whole celebration of the birth of the bastard through me off. Would a king publicly celebrate a child he could not put on the throne? And in front of his wife no less?

reply

Early on, that all seemed abit odd and informal to me

reply

Yes he would and he did! lol

He bestowed multiple honors on him throughout his life, starting with his name. Fitzroy. Which literally means son of the king, which everyone would know.

Next, Henry bestowed upon him the titles Duke of Richmond and Somerset when he was about 6 years old. The king made him a double Duke! The only one in the Kingdom of England has ever had. I think. 

Soon after that Henry appointed him knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Lord High Admiral of England, Lord President of the Council of the North, and Warden of the Marches towards Scotland. And probably would have made him King of Ireland too AND legitimized him as heir to the throne of England if he hadn't died at age 17. Phew!

Even more bizarre was Henry's abortive scheme to marry Fitzroy to Mary I:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_FitzRoy,_1st_Duke_of_Richmond_and_Somerset#Marriage

When Henry VIII began the process of having his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled, it was suggested that FitzRoy marry his own half-sister Mary in order to prevent the annulment and strengthen FitzRoy's claim to the throne. Anxious to prevent the annulment and Henry's eventual break with the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope was even prepared to grant a special dispensation for their marriage

reply

Charles was the only real friend Henry had, he was his brother-in-law, so it is possible that Henry would have permitted it.

reply

He was certainly not Henry's choice of brothers-in-law - the marriage caused initial hostility and estrangement, with Charles being banished from court, so I don't think that's a very valid reason for his ultra-familiarity with the King.

reply

They were raised in the same household.

In reality I don't think Brandon existed as Henry's sister Margaret married James IV of Scotland and was grandmother to Mary queen of Scots and Great grandmother to James VI of Scotland, 1st of England. In all the histories I've read the character of Charles is a minor player in court.

I'm wildly curious to know what "histories" you have read that mentioned Charles Brandon but did not include the fact that he was married to Henry's other sister Mary Tudor?

reply

I think it may be because he was afraid that it was his fault that he and Katherine of Aragon didn't have a son yet, and the one they had dies... So that fact that his mistress gave birth to a healthy son was proof, that it wasn't his fault that he didn't have a son, but maybe instead Katherines fault.

reply

Fitzroy's birth was very hush hush. Formal titles and celebrations only fell on him later, when Henry considered adding him to the line of the succession.

Brandon was in deep trouble for marrying Mary Tudor without permission. The entire Kings Council wanted him imprisoned or executed except for Wolsey, who intervened and convinced Henry to let Brandon off on condition that they pay Henry 25 thousand pounds, return her entire dowry, and Brandon forsake the wealthy Elizabeth Grey as a ward, giving up the title that came with it. It neatly drove them bankrupt but Brandon was not banished from court. Neither as far as we can tell was he a serial womanizer.

reply

Charles was Henry VIII's childhood friend (originally he was Arthur 's friend) he would have been formal and address as your grace, or your majesty in formal circles, but in informal setting he called him Henry.

Even the King probably appreciated having a true friend who occasionally treated him as just that - a friend.
