Actually, I was reading in Psychology Today the other day, that gay men typically have the most masculine voices. Gay men who act like the stereotypical gay man are much easier to spot, thus people assume they represent most of the gay male population. When someone looks and sounds "normal" (AKA, not like a gay male stereotype) it's much harder to figure out their sexual preference at a glance, and I think this makes up a large percentage of the gay population.
