Guaranteed flop.

Watched the first ten minutes. Unbearable.

Well, I'll be seeing it and I sure as hell won't walk out after the first ten minutes. Coming from Paul Schader, and a cast that includes Ned Beatty, Lauren Bacall, Lily Tomlin, William DaFoe, I'll be giving it a fair chance.

gave it a 6 myself, and thought I was being hard on it.

kind of liked it, but it wasn't really interesting. it didn't go anywhere. just a pretty boring story.

The film is for the upper crust of the world. It's high society and not everybody is going to relate w/ the characters. Most people don't know this and its' the dumbing down of this country and lets face it. Most folks are stupid and prefer action, goofy, zany crap that brings in money.

The writer and director happens to be a legend and has more talent in his little finger than 70% of wds working today. After all this is the same man who brought us Taxi Driver and American Gigolo. Two masterpieces in and of itself. But you guys probably don't even know what I"m referring to and that shows how ignorant you more than likely are. And you're probably under the age of 22 yrs old so you have no way to comprehend anything other than, Fast and the furious, and Adam Sandler comedy, Austin Powers or your play by the numbers teeny bopper romance pos, i.e. any film w/ Dane Cook and Jessica Alba.

This was a small budget, independent project for the sake of making something out of the mold of what we get week after week.

Why would "stupid folks" who only like "action, goofy and zany" bother to see this movie at all? That certainly doesn't describe me, but I thought it was dreadful.

I actually really liked this film, but I don't think a person has to be either stupid or shallow to find it boring and a bit pretentious or trying too hard. It amazes me how so many folks seem to forget that films are art, and art is, by its nature, subjective.
Godsakes, what would be the fun in everybody liking the same thing the same way?

In all fairness, though, 90% of all films are not like Kurosawa's, any more than most works of art are not like Michelangelo's, or symphonies like Beethoven's. "Rashomon" is a pretty tough yardstick!

I can't think of many films I like after only 10 minutes – and I rarely find any film unbearable – but I have to say this was a big disappointment coming from Paul Schrader. Terrific cast, meandering plot, but worthwhile nonetheless. 6/10 stars from me.
