Why did that guy say Rock Hudson was in "North by Northwest"

Was he confusing him with Cary Grant b/c he is an inbred hick?

Most people who are not movie buffs don't necessarily remember who played in which movies, particularly old movies. The "joke" was that the person who suggested NBN was mocking the other person for being stupid as to not knowing who Rock Hudson was but he himself had confused him with another actor. It was kind of a stupid bit anyway given the movie is set in 1985 and these are all 40 something guys, they all surely would have known who Hudson was given he was second only to John Wayne as the biggest male movie star in the 50s and 60s and also had a hit tv show. It's like some 40 year olds today not knowing who Slyvester Stallone or Burt Reynolds is.

And they would doubtless have been aware that macho Rock was in fact a Friend of Dorothy's; a player, as the estimable Peter Cook once couched it, of the pink oboe. What all of Hollywood had known previously was finally known by the world in 1985 when Mr Hudson's condition was publicly revealed.

To show how ignorant they are - they can insult someone without knowing much about them - and prejudice usually comes from ignorance...
