Is this a kids movie?

Oh wait, there's boobs and blood and swearing. So why does it feel like I'm watching a movie designed for children?

reply

Children like boobs. Boobs have milk in them. And milk tastes nice. Hence Conan - movie for children.

No, it is not a kid's movie. In fact, I think it has more acts of violence per minute than any other movie I've ever seen...

But, it's also a lightweight movie.

Here's the thing - the 1982 Conan the Barbarian was not only a really good movie, it was a movie that had a lot to say. Under the surface it was a meditation on strength, and what strength means. Arnold's Conan spoke very little, but the movie said a lot. That's why we're still watching it 30 years later - it is a very intelligent and thoughtful movie.

The 2011 movie had a much better Conan (one far closer to the original Robert E. Howard character) - and almost nothing to say. There was next to nothing under the surface. The whole "mixture of hot and cold" and "understanding the sword" themes could have been something, if they hadn't forgotten them as soon as the character grew up. Instead, it was a series of high octane action sequences connected by a light plot.

Now, if you watch the 2D version (which does not have the compromised visuals), it's a pretty decent light, fun action movie. It does succeed in being what it is trying to be. Unfortunately, it really should have been trying to be more. By making the movie so light and free of subtext, the filmmakers also made it forgettable.

It's pretty much on the same level as Xena.
