Religious nonsense

Wow, what a bunch of religious BS. This has to be on the top 10 of worst movies ever made. It boggles the mind how anyone could give this a score above 1.0 without being a complete mindless drone.

UM - this is the church in the 'dark ages' mashed with vampires mashed with post apocalyptic turned into a graphic novel - turned into a movie - metaphorically

I didn't think they let 8th graders like you from evangelical schools watch movies like this.

reply

What the hell are you talking about? If the film has any religious theme (which it really doesn't), it is ANTI-religion. You're incompetent.

reply

You seem like a mindless drone of "this is THE WORST MOVIE EVER" sort.

I thought it was a nice nod to the origins of a relationship between vampirism and the Church, which started in early medieval-period Europe when the Church was set on becoming even more powerful.

It was the Church that adopted vampire folklore to frighten ordinary people into believing that only faith in the Church and God can protect them from the living corpses, or vampires that came to known as. It was the Church's aim - put fear in people to drive them back to the Church and be totally obedient to the Church. It worked.

When more and more scholars, over next twenty or thirty years, debunked vampire myths and legends, the Church disassociated itself from all things vampirism to save their credibility, but its handiwork remains. Why do you think so many vampire folklore and stories since 14th/15th century have religious icons as vampire repellents? :D

I like that Hyung Min-woo (cartoonist) and this film used the origins of an actual historical event as the root of this story and a similar society in the Cities. I thought it was a nice touch.

Apart from that touch, the film isn't that memorable, but fun all the same.

Yes, it doesn't focus on religion at all. It's a backdrop, really.

reply

I concur. You could have called the vampire fighter something else 'rangers' removed all the religious iconography, and the plot still could have worked. There is nothing inherently Christian, or even catholic about the film that is necessary for the story to progress.

While it may be true that the Church often times used calamities and dark fears of the unknown to gather the flock, your assessment is so far removed from fact that it borders on anti-religious zealotry. The Church did not create vampire myth, nor did it really even give it that much notice until the people refused to allow these beliefs to flourish. Vampire lore began as part of the misunderstanding of how diseases and death really occurred. When a plague or some sort of contagion gripped a town, city or region of land, people logically began to look for a human culprit rather than be able to understand the science behind how diseases moved from person-to-person. The people who were typically in charge of towns...mayors and elders and such...would suggest that the first person to die from such a disease was now the purveyor of death. The patient zero was pinpointed as the corpse that animated and departed the grave and then went around visiting house-to-house (usually friends and loved ones left behind) and kill them one by one. There's so much more to the history of vampires than merely this, but your assessment is really a ridiculous anti-religious rant. If you want the real story, read a great book called "Death, Burial, and Vampires" by Paul Barber. It will open your eyes.

What that poster said was actually very accurate, especially the point when he/she said the church ADOPTED the vampire folklore, not created it (it helps to actually read!)

Just because you're too stupid to understand it, doesn't mean it's a plot hole

reply

Thank you for the recommendation, I find these sorts of things, especially the truth behind the myths very interesting!

reply

Do your research before coming up with such ridiculous statements. The Church didn't start vampire legends, they predated Christ even. Maybe you're confusing Transylvania's "Vlad the Impaler".......

reply

Huh, what? Where did I say that the Church started vampire legends? This is what I actually wrote: "It was the Church that adopted vampire folklore [...]" I repeat: they ADOPTED vampire folklore. So you're the one who were confused, not me. Please read more carefully before you throw an accusation again. Thanks.

Apart from the fact there were people praying in this flick and he was called 'a priest' there was virtually ZERO emphasis on religion and faith in this movie. He didn't turn to God at the end in order to find the strength etc etc, he just needed Maggie Q to surf a nitro-bike.

Nothing to do with Religion whatsoever. It is a launch pad for the action scenes. That is all.

reply

Uh, this movie was filled with religious iconography, religious allusions, Catholic church and priests and you think there was "virtually ZERO emphasis on religion"? Either you come from a religious background where all this is the norm or you are really stupid. Also, the cartoon background story was practically a metaphor for the crusades and colonialism. Crusades basically demonized Muslims and colonialism dehumanized non-white, non-Christian people to savages and barbarians, kind of like the vampires shown. One of the three main reasons for colonialism was spreading Christianity. Basically, these evangelists went to non-Christian countries, grabbed the poor and impoverished people and either paid them or lied to them in order to convert them to Christianity and be loyal to the Western cause. Needless to say, this caused great social disarray in these societies. Countries that were lucky to keep the Christians a minority survived (like India, Japan, China, etc). But the not so lucky ones, especially in Africa, still suffers the chaotic waves of colonialism and Christianity that destroyed the very fabric of their cultures.
There's a difference between personal spiritual beliefs and theocracy. Whatever you want to believe in you personal life, whether it's Christian or Wiccan, it's your business and your right. But institutionalize these beliefs, like the Catholic church has, and you are trampling on others' right to believe in whatever they want to believe in. After 9/11, religious extremism has gotten more aggressive. Missionaries still go to third world countries, and people actually think that's a good thing, also there are fanatics openly admitting their beliefs in American public. Remember that American politician who publicly claimed that Allah was a "false god"? Too dumb to realize that Christians, Jews and Muslims all believe in the one Abrahamic God. Well, I'm going off topic. My point is, Hollywood should do more to respect diversity of religious beliefs and get rid of age old stereotypes and bigotry.

reply

I disagree. Hollywood should make entertainment. Get your religious fix elsewhere and let me enjoy movies.

reply

Ummm I was referring to religious content of the flick as opposed to motifs or themes. Mainly due to ummm...vampires?

But if you watch this every sunday whilst you flagellate, thats a-ok with me squire.

I don't know if you know but vampire lore emerged with a hugely Christian background. Bram Stocker's Dracula (the original vampire) was a "heroic" crusader proud of killing off Muslim Turks. Also, he's is like the earthly incarnation of the Devil in Christian lore that needs to be repelled with crosses and holy water. Over the years, the originally intended religious symbolism was taken for granted and lost some of its power. However, it's still very much present. Obviously, you know nothing about the reality of vampire mythology.

reply

Obviously I don't know. I am deeply honoured you could take the time to educate me. Here I was thinking my vampire 'mythology' was obtained from watching MOVIES. What with being on a MOVIE website and the like.

But thats just me and my ignorance. You sir are the vampire know-how messiah us Twilight haters have been waiting for. ALL HAIL THE VAMPIRE MESSIAH!!!

While i love hating on the catholic church this movie had zero to do with them if you watched the movie within the first 15 mins the priest leaves the church and is considered turning his back on god he also never try's to preaching to anyone or telling anyone how to live there lives the reason the catholic church even play's a part in the story is because THAT'S HOW IT WAS WRITTEN IN THE GRAPHIC NOVEL THIS MOVIE IS BASED ON removing the catholic church and renaming the priest would completely change the entire story and i'm sure the guy that created the graphic novel wouldn't be to happy about that.

Secondly while christian's over the century's have caused a lot of hurt and blood lets not try and act like Muslims and Jews are innocent either after all wasn't it Muslims who killed 1000's of people on 9/11??? and continue to kill 1000's of innocent people and if you really look at what caused the crusades you'd see that it was caused by Muslims and Jews attacking Christians and stealing there land the Christians simply desided to fight back i may not agree with the out come but they had a right to fight back against the people who were killing them and stealing there land as far as the Jews Isreal has killed 1000's if not millions of innocent Muslims in there war agaist Islam no religion is free from death and bad things.

And the reason people think missionaries going to poor places like Africa is because the outcome is the people in Africa get things like schools, food, water and medicine from those missionaries if you think those peoples getting those things that they wouldn't have other wise is bad then you're just a hateful idiot that would rather see poor people in Africa either starve to death or die from some easily treatable disease.

Yes, because anyone who doesn't have the same opinion than you on a movie must be a mindless drone.
