Therm-Optics

In the first movie they need special clothes and a veil for the face, right ? By the SAC they're running around going invisible pretty much when they want to.

Sometimes there's a blur sometimes it's perfect invisibility, which I assume is for the TV audience.

When Batou finds that sniper's satellite link (in SSS) and Saitou zooms in on him he can more or less see him, so Therm-Optics is kinda hit & miss ? or like Trek effects: "works as needed, when needed" ?!

Probably a necessary item for the audience. But since the "cloaking device" is now a reality (in the lab they have used it for one frequency of radar, but they say it will work for any wavelength of light: visible, infra-red, UV and radar) like any other technology, how perfect will it be? I don't think anything is every 100%, and this technology will probably follow similar lines. So, it works pretty well most of the time, but isn't perfect.

I don't think the first movie cared too much about actual rational scientific explanations, I mean the Major had to have a veil for her face, but the rest of her was stark naked.

do you have any links for this ?

I agree with you though. I found a PDF for the D20 Roleplaying Game and it goes into considerable detail about the setting, getting into specific technology. I came in on the whole thing in the middle so it's kind of a nice item to have and understand.

Anyway the PDF mentions that certain sensors can "see invisible" so I assume that even though it's for an RPG, it's still fairly right on the money.

I suppose it's mostly for opponents who have no exposure to it.

I found this in a quickie search, I did see a picture of the test device on TV news, can't remember where. This should lead you to it tho...

that's the device I saw on the news.

yes, I saw that on TV in the past few months. very neat thanks.

there is one very important fact that you have yet to consider
in a certain part of the film when they're forcing their way into the SS building, when the 2 tachikoms jump off the top activating their optic camos, the security bot on the top comment on how there's no heat signiture or shadow, and then ventured a guess at the type of thermo-optic being used. Togusa's next line confirms the model number, which suggests there are multiple forms and types of thermal optics that exists in the Gits universe

the many different illustrations of thermo-optics could simply be that different models are being used. Section 9 being such important division could be using a higher class probably more expansive version of the device, while the sniper on the roof was a "stand alone" which obviously wouldn't have access to such high grade clocks

If by "the first movie" you're referring to the one that was released in 1995, then the technology is different because they are, in effect, two different stories. The 1995 movie and Innocence are one "universe" you could say. S.A.C, 2nd Gig and the following movie are another. It's based more on the manga, from what I understand.

the security cyborg even commented on the fact that there was no thermal signature. i think its called therm-optics because it not only hides you visably, but thermally. infa-red would seem like something that would get used alot in their line of work, so hiding the heat signature would make since then.
