DVD release?

Soooooo, has this movie even been releases on DVD in Japan yet? Cause I know 1.0 took just a bit over two years to make it to DVD in America.

It's being released in Japan on May 26th. Don't know about a DVD release in the U.S. The earliest I think we'd get one would either be later this year, or early next year.

1.0 DVD
Japan - 8 months (after original theatrical release)
US - 2 years 3 months

2.0 DVD/BD
Japan - 11 months (after original theatrical release)
US - ???

That's just *beep* up no matter how you look at it. Based on these release dates we can expect 2.0 DVD/BD to be released in the US sometime around Fall of 2011. It's almost like they DON'T want to make money. Guess the only thing to do is to download the jap releases and watch them with fanmade English subtitles.

Well I know the reason 1.0 took so long to get to the U.S was that Gainax was having issues releasing the worldwide rights. That slowly changed and the US was the last to receive the goods.

I was hoping since that's done and over with, maybe it'll come faster this time.

Here's to hoping.

I think a lot of the reason for the long delay with 1.0 was because Gainax/Khara knew this was their flagship franchise and they really elevated the costs for distribution rights. Either way, Funimation still kinda fudged their release in my opinion.

They ANNOUNCED they had the rights to 1.0 on December 31,2008. But then I read an interview with someone associated with the project (I believe it was the actress who plays Misato) and she revealed that they recorded and finished the dubbing in late 2008. Then Funimation just sat on the film for the next 11 months in order to release the film before the holiday season in November 2009. AND THEN they release the extras loaded BluRay and DVD edition in March 2010. It's a bit of *beep* At least Gainax/Khara waited a solid year between rereleases. Funimation released the barebones version of Evangelion 1.0 SIX MONTHS after the extended cut of 1.0 hit Japanese shelves!

Regardless, I figure the distribution rights for Evangelion 1.0 included the whole Rebuild of Evangelion saga. It would seem kind've pointless and counterproductive for them to work on a film by film basis.

BUT if they're repeating with 2.0 the odd process that was Evangelion 1.0 this film could be dubbed and ready for street release in June and they'll just sit on it for months if not a year.

P.S. Not that it would've at all been a nomination but had Funimation released the film in 2008 when they finished the dub and given the film a small Theatrical run (which they did in 2009) Evangelion 1.0 would've been eligible for the Oscars that year. But alas they didn't so when it came to this years ceremonies the film was disqualified because too much time was separated between it's Japanese run and United States run.

There. It's on the Internet. Thus it's official

That's lame. At least this time around I'm sure people are going to wait for the DVD with the extras. I hate it when companies do things based on holiday sales.

the DVD & Blu-Ray are out in Japan, though they lack English subs as expected, the Hong Kong DVD & Blu-Ray though are out next month with English subs if you don't mind watching it subbed, I've already pre-ordered mine, did the same with 1.01 the other year, a great early & legit way to know what's going on when watching (especially given how much of 2.22 is new/very changed stuff)

reply

I don't know why your wasting time and money pre-ordering and waiting for subs.

thepiratebay > evangelion 2.22 in BLURAY quality
sub-titles.net > great english subtitles

cost = free.

Yes. there are various torrents of the film out already.
Also, Eva 2.22 crushed all domestic Japanese home video sales becoming the highest selling BluRay in Japanese history. In one week it sold more copies than that Michael Jackson This Is It (apparently that was the highest seller before...ugh) and even AVATAR. All in all with it's BluRay and DVD sales I believe the film made north of $42 million U.S. in one week. Pretty sweet.

This does little for us. BUT what it does offer is the temptation for anime distributors like Funimation to raise their game and try to license and distribute this film before the year is up so they can hopefully pick up their less than stellar sales results this year.
