Think Brendan Fraser's "The Mummy"

My wife and I just saw this movie, and in many scenes, we turned to each other and whispered, "Just like in the Mummy movie with Brendan Fraser"

The Mummy is a good movie that holds up well. Also see the Jungle Cruise borrowed a lot from Pirates of the Caribbean. Not to say a knock-off couldn't work, but the Jungle Cruise isn't it. To start, the casting was all wrong. The Rock is very good in certain roles, but he really can't act as anything but himself, and it just didn't fit in this role. Brendan Fraser in the Mummy, and Johnny Depp in PotC were both charming and funny and did much to lift their respective movies. Ditto with Emily Blunt. She is very good in certain roles, but here she will invariably be compared to Rachel Weisz's "Evelyn", and Emily falls short here. Even the supporting cast in the earlier movies was better. The characters of the rival treasure hunters in The Mummy were fleshed out and relatable, and Barbossa almost stole the show in PotC. Nothing like that in this movie.

John Hannah (Brendan Fraser's sidekick in The Mummy) was brilliant, and he would have easily stole the show if Fraser and Weisz weren't nailed their roles. One of the most underrated (and underused) actors in comedy.

Hannah was great both as a main role in Sliding Doors (1998, one of my fav romcoms ever) and as a sidekick in The Mummy (1999), but for some reason he didn't get any good role after that. I always wondered why.

He was in Spartacus. That was an award winning show...

From another thread:
Similarities to The Mummy
A British female scientist with daddy issues and an inept brother, rejected by the academia because she is a woman and eager to prove herself better than them, goes into the unknown accompanied by a handsome rogue in debt up to his eye balls.

Similarities to Pirates of the Caribbean
> Greedy adventurers rendered undead by a curse.
> They are in pursuit of a McGuffin, currently held by a pretty lady.
> The McGuffin must be used at the hidden secret location to break the curse.
> While the villains and hero battle it out, they are both pursued by a normal third party that complicates the journey along the way.

It's a good mix of elements from a few previous movies. I've seen Romancing the Stone thrown in as well. I don't think it's a bad thing, just a safe thing and far from innovative or ground breaking. That's okay with me. Not every movie needs to be that.

I agree with your post. You nailed it!

I'd say it's a mix of mummy and pirates of the Caribbean. It has a pretty decent lighthearted vibe - with some jokes which are not half bad. So, even though the story is derivative, I'd say it's a pretty decent remake of sorts. If the jokes/acting was half-arsed, I'd be blasting this film.
I don't expect anything new or remarkable from these types of films - the vibe/jokes do it for me, if everything is well executed.

I had a much bigger issue with Avatar, which was also a mix of numerous stories told before. I expect a bit more novelty in terms of plot from sci-fi films - especially if the film is getting a lot of hype.

Come to think of it, if this film was hyped up to be superior to mummy/potc, I'd be seriously downvoting it, because hype based on false premises should be discouraged.
