After the end of "Renewal" ep. 26, Light would have been unstoppable.

The world was increasingly supportive of Kira, some governments are essentially supportive of Kira, and it essentially says Kira has already essentially become 'god of the new world'.

Kira would get diplomatic immunity. Light Yagami easily could have become the new L and moved his entire family into a super secure building/compound. Maybe even buy an entire island in which his family would live and L and Co. would operate. Obviously, he would fire anyone who is possibly against him.

'Kira' easily got the police force to stop going after 'him' by threatening their lives. If need be, Kira could have easily done that with the world leaders. Near and Mello and such would have no legal authority to go after Kira. They wouldn't have the financial resources they had because those resources would belong to Light.

In the real world, evil dictators remain in power if they have the support of a powerful country and/or if they rule a powerful country. Other than trying to assassinate Kira, how could Kira possibly be killed if he is increasingly popular and more and more governments support him?

I had a whole thing written up, until I realized you weren't saying that he should announce himself to the world, and sit on an iron throne, or whatever.

I still think the conclusions you come to are remarkably childlike in their simplicity. For example, I would like to know what is not supicious about moving your family to an island fortress, considering Kira's reach, how does it protect you from him - in fact, how does making it illegal to track down Kira not immediately give away the game? If it's illegal to track Kira, then somebody should be trying to kick down L's door, "where is he, I don't know, why don't you check that brand new Doctor Weird-like island fortress, that a supervillian totally would not have built." Furthermore, how does Light vet these employees, eh? The ones he fires (I don't know why he hired them in the first place, if they weren't what he wanted, but whatever). I would think that if I'm his family, I would begin to wonder why the "New L" so intent on capturing Kira, was surrounding himself with Kira zealots. Also, people lie. It is remarkably easy to lie - the Death Note doesn't make Light pyschic.

And how does he get these people to their job interview without attracting suspicion?

Either he recruits people from the anti-kira perspective, and thus finds no one on board for his crap, while revealing to a world that has supposedly agreed to arrest anyone looking for Kira, that he is trying to stop Kira. If he recruits pro Kira followers the same intelligence reveals "Kira must be in that castle - right there!"

And yes... laws. (Speaking of lies.) You know there are all kinds of laws? Like did you know it's kind of illegal to spy on your allies? That's weird isn't it, because America does it all of the time... Laws are just paper with words on them that governments agree to obey. It's easy not to agree to obey, when the words basically enslave you too, but you otherwise hold all the resources and authority. Laws are not magic seals. There's certain sh!t that just will not fly and "Supreme God Dictator of The World" is one of them. Nearly every sane police force (or military) in the world would have a secret unit dedicated solely to finding, and murdering the son of a bitch. He bullied the police force into backing down because then he was a faceless elusive threat. - You see you undermine your point by saying "other than trying to assassinate him," because that becomes priority number one for everyone who once held positions of ultimate power in their respective countries, and a whoooole lot of other people. Your whole hypothetical just dismisses the agendas of everyone who isn't Light on the basis that "everyone has pretty much agreed to support him" as if support based on resentment is inspirational. Considering how obvious it would be - at this point, that Light is Kira, any killer with a fraction the intelligence L had, would have him dead inside six months. All any of this would do is paint a giant target on his back. I suspect that's why he was smart enough not to attempt anything remotely like this.

And everyone would know, instinctively, that a guy who hid his face for that long must have some reasonable fear of being killed, or incapacitated. He would be far from "unstoppable" as Matsuda demonstrated beautifully:

Maybe unstoppable the way Kanye West is "unstoppable" but that's it. Hell, given the hilarious obviousness of the whole island fortress things, if I was the President of the United States I would immediately launch a nuke at him, and I would love to see him try to weasel his way out of that one.

* Light become the new L. L was easily able to make a fortress skyscraper. That building likely cost well over $1B. It shouldn't have been difficult to move his family into a secure building or on a private island.

-- In addition, Light has a celebrity girlfriend and could easily use that as a further excuse why he and his family need protection.

* Kira was getting the support of governments and getting the support of the people. It wouldn't be too difficult to get the governments to stop pursuing Kira. A United Nations Security Council Resolution could be made.

- L could be pursuing other cases. It's not as if Japan can be against the Security Council.

Nearly every sane police force (or military) in the world would have a secret unit dedicated solely to finding, and murdering [Kira].
Why? Kira was killing murderers and other bad people and increasingly had the support of the world including the world's governments.

A lot of awful dictators are still in power.

Light is alive years later. The only reason he dies is because the series decided to suddenly make him stupid and greatly weaken his position so he could be killed.

Anyway, you seem to ignore my point about Light's being the new L and what that should have resulted in. Light as "L" would have L's resources. Light as "L" would need to hide from Kira. He could easily use the excuse of L's apparently being killed by Kira so Light must ensure that Kira never sees Light's face or at least never learns Light is the new L.
