Why would he be at a laundromat if he was living with the Touhy's?

if you watched the minutes before that scene, he was given an assignment to write an essay. The assignment that he was writing about was someone who was down and out and then came out of it. He was walking around where he used to live and in his town and the laundromat was there. He sat down and wrote part of his essay at the laundromat. He actually went to the laundromat at the end of the movie also. It was in his old town. He probably felt comfortable there since he was from there.
