How did Carol Survive going outside to get her kids?

Maybe she told some of the creatures to look at the flowers after wich the others were scared of her?

She covered herself with Mist-monster guts and went around stabbing them all in the head.

50 percent luck, and 50 percent that she left early, before all the really nasty creatures came through. She moved quickly, and we can assume, met up with the military very quickly.
