It was phony, affected laughter by an over the top gay man and shallow socialite type woman.
...almost!
So, the actual joke was that the mother's little word play joke was not so funny: the interchanging of the homonyms of the El in El Salvador with "L." in L.A. So what actually makes it funny is the way the stereo-typical gay guy OVER-laughs at the bad pun!
