Why didn't they take a raven with them?

Why didn't they take a raven with them?

reply

Because the show has gone ahead of GRRM's writing, and the people who are writing it now are much inferior to him, thus the characters aren't as smart as they used to be.

You'd think they (the writers) would have at least remembered that when Jorah Mormont led a raid beyond the Wall, he brought ravens with him. At least in the books; can't remember if it was mentioned/shown in the show. But in the book at least, it was prominent because Sam was in charge of the ravens and had to send the ravens out when the army of the dead attacked their camp.

reply

I think it was in the show, too. He ordered Sam to send the ravens, but something happened before he was able to.

reply

Apparently it takes a Maester to send a Raven, as in put a spell on the Raven so it flies exactly where it's supposed to go, and you wouldn't catch a Maester of Oldtown north of the wall...

reply

😂 That'd explain a lot!

... But I don't think so. Maesters typically don't like magic.

reply

Hahaha, and for all we know the 'spell' is just a certain mixture of berries and peanuts Ravens love, and depending on the flavor or type of mixture, that is where they fly. ROFL.

They haven't actually 'fully' shown a Maester prepping a Raven for flight yet, just some clips here and there, Maester Luwins frantic last-second raven from Winterfell comes to mind.

reply

The ravens are not magical. They don't tell a raven where to fly, each raven will only fly to one place. That's why they have to keep a lot of ravens and they are each imprinted with ONE location- major castles and forts. They showed the cages once and they are labeled with all the castle names. So a Kings Landing raven will only fly to Kings Landing. A Dragonstone raven will only fly to Dragonstone, etc. And once it gets to it's destination, they can't send the same raven back with a reply because it's not imprinted on the place it came from , it's only imprinted with one destination , which is the place it was raised.

So like you raise a flock of ravens at one castle , lets say Winterfell, they get imprinted there, and then send them out in cages on wagons and ships to all the other castles. So then all the other castles use those ravens to send messages to Winterfell.
It's also why you can send a raven from North of the wall , or from a ship, or the middle of a forest, but you can't receive ravens there. Because there are no ravens imprinted with that location.

reply

That's not magic, Popcorn. Homing pigeons do that naturally, which is why they used to be used for messages.

reply

oops. I meant to say they are NOT magical.
I left out a word- I agree with you. there is no magic spell to make a raven go to a specific location. each bird only goes one place.

reply

Oh, okay. 😅

reply

Yeah, they definitely should have. Also would have been cool if Bran was following them via a raven and keeping an eye on them.

reply

because it would freeze to death?
