Kind of messed up Lyanna naming her son Aegon

Considering Rhaegar already had a son named Aegon.
Also what a terrible pick of the actor that played Rhaegar he looked like a big cranium Viserys.

reply

I think that was the point, seeing as how Viserys and Daenerys are products of incest themselves. Rhaegar appeared exactly as I imagined him surprisingly.

reply

But in the books they went on and on how handsome he was.

reply

I thought he looked like the same actor that played Viserys from S1, only older.

reply

Yeah I wondered that myself actually.

reply

I was convinced it was the same actor when I first saw it but I know it's not.. we didn't really see him all that clearly but I thought he was pretty good looking.

reply

THink they just busted out Viserys old wig!

reply

Can you please remind me if on the show Rhaegar did call his other son Aegon?

I can't remember if they ever named Rhaegar's two other kids or not on the show. In the books sure we are given the two kids names but on the show itself? I can't remember if they did, the mention of them always seems to put them together as a collective entity rather than actual individuals.

It might be a change from the books that the showrunners don't see as important because they aren't using characters that complicate things (...cough young Griff)

Also I say this because Jon tells Dany that her father burnt his grandfather alive and his uncle ALIVE. But in the books Brandon strangled himself to death trying to save his father in front of everyone. Every person from Westeros would know how both Starks died but no-one corrects Jon.

reply

According to the Game of Thrones wiki his first son was named Aegon.

reply

Yes but according to Game of thrones Wiki and the books say Brandon stark was tied to a strangulation device and not burnt to death by wildfire

But on the show itself Jon says

Doesn't matter what Wiki or the books say, what is on screen is king.

reply

The Night King? Well he was pretty bad as riding the dragon and burning the wall.

reply

even as a pun that makes no sense

reply

It's word play faggot.

reply

Know I can talk tripe but not a big offal fan. Tho peas and gravy.....

reply

They never named Elia and Rhaegar's children in the show.

reply

So basically the show has given itself wiggle room.

Though I know it is little things but canon this year has not been as good.

Jon and the mention that his uncle was burnt to death rather than strangled

Aegon being Jon's name but them not having named the other kids and would Lyanna know if Rhagear's kids had been killed when she gave birth. Can't see the likes of Arthur Dane tell a woman who is in the late stages of pregnancy about what happened to Elia and the kids after her knowing what happened to Rhagear.

Also Tyrion's line at the Dragon pit about how there is no conversation that would erase the last 50 years. But Aerys was a good king when he started and even when he started to go mad the Kingdom was stable until Jamie was inducted into the Kingsguard causing Tywin to quit as the Hand of the King. (Jamie isn't 60). Lannister, Stark and Targeryan got along at that point - at least publicly. Robert's Rebellion was the thing that changed that and that was about 25 years previous. In season 1 Catlin complains that Ned rode off 17 years before with Robert to war and came back with Jon. So where does Tyrion get 50 years from??

reply

Yeah, I was wondering what he meant by that too. I mean, we follow the given timelines and 50 years was not a part of it.

I highly doubt that Lyanna knew anything about Elia and the children being murdered. But, I'm sure they told her about Rhaegar. My thinking is that Rhaegar told her about the PTWP prophecy and that he wanted that child to be named Aegon, so she did it. That's the only way it makes sense to me.

reply

I agree, I can't see them telling her about the horror of what happened at Kingslanding especially so soon after her losing Rhaegar. But I also think as the show never named the kids the show is giving themselves wiggle room and also going to try and use some of the the young Griff storyline. Because isn't there a bit where they discuss that even though young Griff can claim a higher position in the succession Dany has the more credible claim as no-one can question who she is and who is backing her up? But wasn't he also described as knowing Kingship is a duty and in the books didn'y GRR Martin have Dany mused about marrying her nephew and Lord Connington saying Young Griff needs to marry Dany to ensure his succession.

Though I know this is me I was hoping when I saw Lyanna mouth the name it was Aemon isn't of Aegon. As it would also be a Targeryan name and if I remember from the books most Aemons were honourable men and if they were the a younger brother they tended to put duty above personal gain.

For me that would have made the story Dragon with three heads make more sense - Rhaeger wanting three kids with one named for the conqueror and the one Rhaegar hoped was the Prince that was promised. One named after the Rhaenys mother of the Targaryen kings and the last Aemon named after Prince Aemon the Dragonknight the noblest knight that ever lived or maester Aemon who was at castle black and refused the crown.

reply

Haha, yeah he looked a lot like Viserys but I think it's because they used the same wig on the actor playing Rhaegar.

The name Aegon must've been purposeful for Rhaegar, giving the name to a son that he thinks should fulfill a prophecy.

reply

Did they actually use the same wig? It definitely looked like they did, which threw me off a bit, lol.

That's a good point about the name Aegon.

reply

Because of all the fanfic drawings, I imagined Rhaegar to have had long hair. It would've been nice if they gave him curly hair with a widow's peak to match Jon's.

reply

It would have been nice if there had been some physical resemblance to Jon!

Personally, I wanted him to be short, but he towered over the girl who played Lyanna.

I believe Aegon the elder was already DEAD by then, killed by the Mountain along with his mother. Rhegar was certainly dead, and Lyanna hadn't seen him for some time before he died.

So by naming her new baby after his late half-brother, Lyanna was thinking of Rhegar's feelings for his other children, and honoring her late stepson. Although I don't know how intense those paternal feelings could have been, if he was willing to declare them bastards.

reply

I was holding out for the name Jaehaerys Targaryen.

Jaehaerys I Targaryen brought 55 years of peace and prosperity to Westeros.

But, unfortunately, Game of Thrones won't have such a happy ending. Count on it.

reply

I was hoping for that name as well. I did find an article which tries to explain the reason for the name Aegon. Thought the board might find this article interesting.

Thanks for sharing!

I came across the ff video on yt, this guy predicted Jon's real name was Aegon last year and gave reasons why he thought it would be so.

Warning though, his mic is very low so you have to really amp up your volume to hear him when he talks.

Thanks for sharing as well!

reply

That was the name I wanted him to have too. Jaeherys is a cool name and he was a great king.

reply

So, maybe you wanted him to be super-great looking, better than anyone else. The producers and directors make these choices for a reason.
