Why was the family so alright with Kate dating a middle aged man with a kid?

Was she not 17 when she became a flight attendant and met the older guy? when the show starts shes 15 so i'd guess by season 3 shes 17, and meets a guy who was married for like 10 years and has a kid, so he's at least 30 or older, and its like her family has no issues with that at all.

And i'm just thinking isn't she still a teenager? why are they acting like shes in her 20's?

Before that guy she was dating a rich older guy she met online, she was definitely still underage for that, and again the parents gave zero fucks. And there was the time Kate was making out with an adult guy in a hot tub and her mom really didn't care either. Just so odd how they allow Kate to hook up with any guy she wants regardless of age.

Interesting. It was probably considered edgy and SJW for the time. Now though given the (manufactured) outrage over the age gap in the first Jurassic Park film it seems to be something that would not work anymore.

Maybe they were trying to show how messed up Tara and the family were that no one really noticed, let alone cared?
