TOTALLY MISREPRESETS brazilian Jiu-jitsu

Let's begin with a few things.

1.We never speak in terms of dojos or dishonor of the academy or any such nonsense. Since BJJ is not a traditional martial art we do not deal with any pseudo-religious pagan garbage. We train we shoot the $hit we throw our belts around when they get tangeled(most schools see this as disrespecting the "dojo" and our sacred belts, PUKE), we don't usually bow (some schools do it at beginning of class), we don't throw salt on the mat or feel the chi, nor do we burn insense. Go to Brazil and visit the schools there, guys are drinking drugging and hanging with hookers from what i hear, not that it's right, but no one is Mr. Miagi in traditional BJJ schools.

2.BJJ is not a fast paced style where you take on and dismantle 20 opponents one after the other, in fact there IS NO SUCH STYLE that's just Hollywood being Hollywood I guess.

3.YOU DO NOT NEED A BLACK BELT IN ORDER TO INSTRUCT

Where did they get this hogwash? A white belt is a guy who walks off the street? Yeah, it could also be a guy who's been there a year and is still working to get his 4th stripe to move up to bluebelt and knows a good deal. A black belt means you're qualified to instruct? No, brown belts, blue belts, purple belts, you name it, they teach. In fact many schools are RUN by purple belts. My instructor is a black belt but he opened his school as a blue belt, as have many others.

4.How does a one strip black belt have such a tattered belt? That was just silly. My instructor has been a black belt for about 6 years now and his belt is faded, but hardly beat up like that and he has 2 stripes, I believe you get a stripe every 3 years.

Sticking to the above, how does said 1 stripe black belt get a redbelt after one good fight? If that were the case Rickson, Royce , Renzo and his others sons would have gotten their red belts after their crazy battles (Rickson in 1995, Royce, 1991, 1992, 1993, Renzo in 1995) Only founders so far have redbelts, that was just gay. I realize this was only HEAVILY based on the gracies but COME ON.

If you love Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it, copy this and make it your signature!

PS: How does Ed O'Neil, a student, a blackbelt under Rorion in Torrance CA have the gull to appear in this movie? First he does a rally for BO, Barack osama and now this? You're dead to me Al Bundy.

Here's a couple of counter-points
1. It's stated over and over that Mike is a "purist" his honour and belief system don't come from his art, they come from his own philosophical belief.
2. It's obvious he isn't solely a student of BJJ, you can see that from the differing techniques amongst other references to traditional JJ.
3. There wasn't any "pseudo-religious pagan garbage" in the movie, no idea where you got that from.
4. It was his own personal choice to let Joe (the cop) teach the class. It was obvious that he cared a great deal for his students and only wanted them to be taught by the very best.
5. Him having a tattered belt could be from a variety of things including that he probably rolled everyday, and probably all day. I think it was just put there to emphasise that in a rather blatant way.
6. BJJ is certainly not a "fast paced style where you take on and dismantle 20 opponents" but all the moves he used near the end against the security guards were genuine BJJ or JJ moves, they were just jazzed up a bit (except for that wall flip, that was total bs)
7. He wasn't officially awarded the redbelt, "The Professor" gave it to him as a sign of respect for striking out against the blatant bullshido that was being marketed there.
8. Lastly you're basing all your views from what you've seen at your gym/dojo, saying that all BJJ places "shoot $hit" and throw belts around is a mass, mass generalisation and sure in Brazil, guys may drink/drug/do hookers but Mike was a married ex-alcoholic.

Ditto on the above. In addition,

1)Jujitsu was founded in Japan, not Brazil. BJJ is a style, and according to you, I guess BJJ is devoid of any philosophy.

2)You don't even see the irony in your statement, "you don't need a black belt to instruct"...Mike and his student make light of it in front of Joe when they say that a black belt is only good to keep your pants on. Duh!

These are for you McNulty!

You do realize that the movie was about traditional JJ more than BJJ, don't you? And it's a movie. Expecting super realism on your part is really dumb.

I'm not an actor. I just play one on TV.

Correct. Redbelt was about traditional budo values, and how they can be maintained in the world of sports martial arts.

Who gives a crap?

Mamet pwns anything anyone has to say about the specifics of a martial art...

Understand the OP points on the aspect of BJJ in the movie. With that being said, it is just a movie not reality. I work in the medical field and 99% of the time in movies or TV when something to do with medical field is shown; I kinda cringe. Because the scenes are so unrealistic. If Mamet had stuck to the realities of BJJ it probably whould have been too esoteric for the general public. Anyhow, I thought the movie was decent.

first off all what your school does isnt what every other school does. and second off all mike terry isnt supposed to be a teacher of bjj he teaches simple old japanese jui jitsu. which is what ejifor was taught for the movie.
3rd off all i have seen people take on 5 and 6 guys easily i have even seen one guy walk into a bar fight and take on 10 guys he walked out of that bar with some scrapes and some bruises but the other guys were on the ground. 4th no one said you need a black belt to instruct. and again your basing your opinion on what your school does infact some schools you do not start off with white some schools start of with red as a beginer move on to white and all the way up to black some start off on black and move to white. some end with red belt in the case of this movie the red belt is an honerary belt given to the student who displays honor and loyalty and trust. many systems give out such a belt and you dont have to be an expert to recieve such a belt
