Even Mamet couldn't ruin Ejiofor

In my opinion Chiwetel carried this movie with his impressive performance; I don't think there can be any doubt that he deserves more lead roles after seeing him in this movie. Unfortunately, the film was hampered by classic David Mamet dialogue - that is, dialogue that is just god awful. However, I think Ejiofor was able to act through it well enough and save/preserve the entertainment value of the movie. Thank goodness.

Ejiofor is definitely awesome, in this film and everything else he's done. For another great leading performance of his, see Dirty Pretty Things.

I've never seen him to a bad performance. He's even good in the somewhat cheesy scifi "Serenity"(allthough I'm a fan of the franchise).

Serenity is one of the best scifi flicks in recent years. I don't really get how you could find it "cheesy" aside from some of the special effects.

I loved Serenity and Firefly(just watch me sig), but I can imagine that Serenity comes out at somewhat cheesy for someone who hasnt followed Firefly.
Allthough I'm a bit harsh on scifi in general, like it gritty like Alien. BSG is pretty much the only show except for Firefly that I liked.
And I actually liked the FX in Serenity, oddly enough.

Fair enough. I can see how outsiders might find it cheesy, especially in this day and age when any happy ending makes a movie cheesy and seems to eliminate it from any kind of significant critical praise.

'Farscape' did it for me, too.

If you think Mamet's dialogue is god awful then you're out of your *beep* mind.

reply

I liked Redbelt, but come on, there are moments when the dialogue is cringe inducing and even the good actors involved can't sell it.

reply

God-awful?! Are you kidding me? He's one of the greatest screenwriters in Hollywood. He was nominated for an Oscar twice and won the Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross. You don't what you're *beep* talking about.

reply

exactly --- if u havent seen glengarry glen ross u have no idea what mamet can do...

You only find Mamet awful if you're mentally challenged in some profound way.

I find that Mamet's dialogue has become a charicature of itself. It has become unintentionally funny. Ejiofor on the other had a bloody great!

true

Ejiofor was one of the few good things of the film. He will certainly have other chances in leading roles. As for Mamet, these days he spends more time trying to write like Mamet than actually creating a real plot. The film is just too ridiculously implausible...

reply

wow, that's a first...someone that dislikes mamet's writing...

Well, both seem to recognize his earlier greatness, by saying he caricatures himself--or tries to write like Mamet.
