One way to appreciate this movie more....

I know this sounds obvious, but from some of the critiques here, it seems these complainers fail to view this film through a sort of historical lens when it comes to masculinity, especially when it comes to the types of characters in this movie and their roles in society.

For one thing, this film is about masculinity and the concept of masculinity, and from the start, one way to enhance the impact of this movie is to imagine it from 1925 and before and consciously make that sort of viewing lens of observation, while keeping in mind how masculinity was viewed back then and what it meant when it came to the affections of men toward other men whether homosexual affections or just heterosexual affections such as mentoring and kin to kin and friend to friend and worker to worker.

As someone else also pointed out, this film has to be watched carefully close because EVERYTHING means something and often portends to what is going to follow.

For example, I sort of missed the importance of when the son tells the mother that it is his job to keep her happy and safe and just took that as a sort of everyday comment an adolescent makes to a parent.

Going in with the mindset of how little things will be important, especially later, will enhance viewing, as does keeping in mind historical views of the masculinity of the American male.

(I'm not even going to get into the "toxic male," and homophobia of some commentators because most of them are being done in an immature and thoughtless rambling of silliness. Frankly, it is bizarre to me how so many homophobes even watched this when all the advanced publicity sort of mentioned the homosexual angle prior to the movie being aired.)

reply

It's the worst film in the past 5 years.

reply

Must have made you uncomfortable.

reply

Unrealistic premise and poorly acted I'm afraid.

reply

Just out of curiosity, what did you find unrealistic about the premise?

reply

He’s just grasping at straws because it made him uncomfortable.

reply

This film sucked. Midnight Cowboy explored the same themes 60 years ago, it did it better then, it does it better now.

reply

How does the theme of this film relate to Midnight Cowboy?

reply

From the comments of the homophobes, they didn't watch it for the most part

reply

The people that don’t like homies

reply

The standard "if you didn't like it you're a phobe" movie invincibility shield?

HAHA what is it 2015?

reply

I knew there was going to be lots of symbolism in the movie the minute I saw the first scene of the herd of cattle and two young bulls were fighting, bumping heads and the older bull came in and put a stop to it. Very symbolic of the discord between brothers and the importance of older male influence. The cinematography was such an important part of the film.

reply

Nice observation!

reply

That was the best part of the film lol. I usually like dark films but this fell flat. It just didnt grab me

reply

It started out great. Amazing cinematography and acting. But when they revealed Phil is gay, I did a total face-palm because it feels so done and cliched. I don't want to watch Brokeback Mountain again.

Obviously, it's based on a book so nothing can be done too differently but feels like a waste and potentially a much better than it is now.

YEAH...CLICHED...THE SECOND TIME YOU SAW IT...LMAO.

reply

How is this film 'cliched' because it has troubled gay characters . . . because another movie had gay lead characters? This film had nothing to do with Brokeback Mountain.

Benedict Cumberbatch played a gay guy in "The Imitation Game". Which was a far better movie. Phillip being gay really didn't add anything to the plot. We don't know if Ted Bundy Jr. killed him because he was gay or because Phil hated his mother. Even if he did, it was a boring ass movie. About boring ass people. I don't give a shit what this movie has to say about "masculinity" or "toxic males" or "homosexuality" or whatever. Just make something that doesn't bore me to death. But this form the same director who thought everybody wanted to see Harvey Keitel Dick 20 years ago in the Piano.

reply

It's another gay cowboy movie. I wonder if one of the leads will off himself and then be turned into a legend - cause that's how it goes in the hollywood.

reply

OP there's nothing historical about this movie considering Brokeback Mountain did a much better job 17 years ago.

reply

What does this film have to do with Brokeback Mountain? Because both film had gay characters in them? What was the message you got from BBM? This film has a completely different theme and storyline . . .

reply

wouldnt say complete other theme. This time it is in the 1900 but it is still about honosexuality in a male/straight dominated western background. So it has a different perspektive and another story but the theme is not new...
