Underrated Masterpiece. One of the best horror movies of all time

I'm a horror buff, but Very few American horror movies in the past 10-15 years have really wowed me, but this one did

The main characters were all fairly smart, which is pretty rare in horror movies. It's a common tactic in horror movies to dumb down the characters so that they can put themselves in dangerous situations. So kudos to the writers for not taking the easy approach. I liked how the outlaw and the hot girl used a scooper to slide the lighter fluid under the closed door so as not to risk getting attacked

The acting was good, especially that of Shea Whigham, who should have gotten a much bigger career boost from this film because he's a real badass

Also, the concept is fairly original and intriguing. The "monster" itself is just a simple, multicellular mold-like spiky organism. But the fact that it uses corpses and limbs for mobility gives it a very disturbing and grotesque appearance, especially when it sows multiple bodies together

The only real problem I had with the movie was the camerawork. It's hard to tell how exactly the monster kills its victims. Mainly you just see it shooting splints or flailing itself towards its prey and in the next shot the person is dead. It doesn't seem to bite, stab, or bludgeon it's victims, yet the deaths are very quick.

In summary, I think Splinter is an underrated horror classic. It should have spawned a franchise and turned the writers, the director, and Shea Whigham into stars.

it has potential yes - totally ruined by the camera work .. so annoying in every monster scene

at some point I even thought I was watching a "cut" version because the chick bumped into the fuel pump and in the next shot she was totally shredded by the monster - okay ....

I agree with your points. It’s immensely watchable. I remember seeing it back in 2008 or so and loved it. Always thought there’d be a sequel but no. Now it’s on Amazon.

The idea of a spiky parasite and it's victim remaining conscious as they turn against other humans is neat, but everything else was below average.

A few people trapped in a gas station/grocery store/diner while a monster waits outside has been done a million times.
