Sandra Bullock too old for Ryan Reynolds. Who should have been Margaret?

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but, while I enjoyed this movie, I was distracted by the 12 year age difference between Margaret and Andrew. I think Sandra Bullock is too mature, now, for these types of frivolous fluff movies. I could think of a lot of younger actresses, maybe a few years older than Ryan Reynolds, who could have done as well or better playing Margaret. Emily Blunt, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz, Mila Kunis. Just a short list. Who do you think would have been a better fit?

reply

They all could have done it. But I liked the movie to begin with.

reply

I liked it too. Just would have liked it more with a younger actress. I am a 30 year old woman, btw, not some young jerk guy. Maybe it's just my aversion to dating younger guys showing.

reply

I'm older than you. Let's date.

reply

LMAO! Your post really struck me funny!

I'm smitten. I'm in deep smit.

reply

Could be. I'm a 32 year old woman who has NO aversion to dating younger men...lol. Give me a few more years & I could be a cougar.

Maybe some younger guys have an aversion to dating older women jerks.

reply

Well if the female lead was younger than Ryan Reynolds, it'd seem rather weird that she was his boss (not that it isn't possible, but it fits the roles better that she is more mature).

I also think the age difference seems smaller in the movie than in reality, due to make-up etc.

reply

I think the older the actress the funnier the bedroom scenes would have been. A younger actress would not look believable in those scenes unless she were portrayed as a prude.

reply

Emily Blunt, Kate Hudson and Mila Kunis are all younger than Ryan Reynolds.

Just wondering, would you have the same problem if the roles were reversed and the man was 12 years older? This happens all the time in movies.

The Proposal wouldn't have been great if Sandra Bullock hadn't been it. She had a sense of bossism (which was important), which Cameron Diaz, Mila Kunis, and Kate Hudson does NOT have.

Completely agree with this!

reply

The world is full of haters man iloved this too man, you never hankered after the older womean?? plus there is a fine line between love and hate lol

reply

I didn't notice the age difference between the two.

Sandra Bullock looked extremely thin in the movie. In real life, that translates to 'even thinner than that!' A natural look for a workaholic, career-driven single woman in a high-profile job in NYC.

Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, looks healthy and athletic, even wearing a suit. A natural look for a guy who grew up in a town bordering on wilderness.

If the difference is these two people seems to be age, that's just one way to look at it. It could also be 'difference in lifestyles.'

reply

bossism??

I looked it up and there is such a word;well you learn something new every day.

reply

I thought the casting was great. Besides, Margaret was the editor - Ryan was still trying to get into a similar role and if they had ben a similar age it wouldn't have made as much sense. If anything, I would have recast Reynolds, but it works with him. I only watched this because of Sandra, she's brilliant in everything and is the most watchable and likeable actress possible. I don't even think it's her beauty that makes her appealing, it's just her, so they couldn't have recast her.

reply

Thank God!!! Thank you for your post!

Everyday I learn something new!

reply

I agree exactly. If it had been George Clooney and Cameron Diaz (11 years apart), no one would say anything.
And Sandra is freakin' hot, so who cares?

reply

Sandra is NOT at all too old for Ryan. They are an EXCELLENT match. At any rate, MANY men are into women who are a bit more mature... level-headed and know what they want.

Sandra is really funny, and beautiful.

And she is SMOKING HOT!

Plus, she is way more NATURAL (far less cosmetic procedures) than many in Hollywood.

I'm really glad she never put in implants.

Yeah, I heart Sandra Bullock.

reply

I agree, I wouldnt want it any other way, Sandra was perfect opposite Ryan.

reply

I agree and I don't think Sandra is too old for him. She is only 12 years older than him. I don't think that's that bad. Plus, I think she looked younger in the movie!

reply

Thank you. My comment was gonna be how hot she was, especially in the nude scene. There was nothing left to the imagination, and I heard no complaints that she was saggy or old. I really can't believe anyone considered her unfit for playing a sexy, successful editor. Kate Hudson plays well in other stuff, but Sandra and Ryan were quite believable, up to and including the ultimate love that developed. Sheesh. What am I doing wasting this typing time?

reply

yes and they also have most male leads overweight as well as older and the woman has to be young and skinny.

I loved the movie by the way.

reply

Well said angelthman. Very few people complain about the huge age difference when the leading man is decades older than the leading woman (Woody Allen movies are prime examples).

I think Sandra was fine for the role, but if it had to be somebody else...I say Cameron D.!!

reply

I wouldn't go see if it Diaz or Hudson were in it. Not that I don't like them, but I never miss a Sandra Bullock film. She's just too darned funny!

Excluding Cameron, ALL of the women you listed are YOUNGER than Ryan.

Also, what's to say that another actress would have had the same level of chemistry with Ryan as Sandra did AND be as endearing and goofy as Sandra's acting?

The *only* actress I could think of would be Cameron Diaz.

reply

True. I did have a hard time thinking of a actress older than Ryan Reynolds, who could pull off Margaret. Good thing I'm not a casting director. Guess we all know why.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT.hOWEVER,IF SANDRA WOULD HAVE DONE THE ENTIRE FILM IN A BLACK STRING BIKINI AND PUMPS....EVERYONE WOULD BE ADMIRING THOSE LUSCIOUS MUSCULAR THIGHS,BULGING SEXY CALVES,NICE TIGHT ASS AND HER SUCCULENT BREASTS,
NOT TO MENTION THAT FACE WHOA......THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TIME TO ASK HER AGE.
ALL KIDDING ASIDE,SHE USUALLY DOES A GOOD JOB OF ACTING...BUT I DO AGREE WITH YOUR POINT AS I MENTIONED BEFORE I GOOFED OFF ON PEOPLE.
PERHAPS THAT BLACK BABY DID NOT WANT TO BE TAKEN AWAY FROM HER PEOPLE,I THINK IT WAS WRONG OF MS BULLOCK.

reply

It's actually nice to see an older woman with a younger man. We too often see comedies where as the male comedians get older, their love interests get younger.

reply

personally I have a thing for May/December romances, and it's been about time that Hollywood made a romcom where the woman is the mature one.

reply

there was this one movie with Michelle Pfeiffer- I could never be your woman. I think that's the title. Cute movie. She was a lot older than her guy too. She was a tv show producer.

reply

In I could never be your woman, the age difference was part of the plot though. It wasn't in The proposal, which I liked a lot. The age difference shouldn't be distracting then because, as it was said before, they're both consenting adults. It grosses me out to see 60 year old men with 20 year old women, but a 10-15 years difference is common.

You mean like Jack Nicholson and Amanda Peet in Something's Gotta Give? Now that was ridiculous! Even Diane Keaton is 9 years younger than him.

reply

I disagree. I think the age difference was part of the plot. He was just starting out his career, she was already well into hers. She was the boss, so I would say she IS supposed to be older.

reply

I don't think the movie would have made sense if Margaret was the same age as Andrew or younger. I mean she was the boss, she was the one with all the training etc., whereas he was just her assistant. She probably had to start on the bottom rung when she was his age too. And as well, Sandra Bullock is 45 in real life but she looks like she's late 30's. Ryan Reynolds is in his early 30's but he looks like he's about 28. I don't get why anyone hates the relationship no matter what age they are. I mean they're both adults so there's no wrong doing.

It's official. Hannah Montana is a poison.

reply

Honestly NO one could have done the role better than Bullock. She was great!!! Like Ryan Rynolds has said in movie interviews, there's no other actress in Hollywood that beautiful that is so willing to make a complete mockery of herself. She embodied the role very well...

And the chemistry between the 2 of them was wonderful... I couldn't see Cameron Diaz or anyone else with Ryan Reynolds and having such a great on screen chemistry....

What is wrong with you people 12 years is not an ok age difference. You don't have many commonalities culturaly as different things happened during your childhood. And to be quite honest you have to do that reverse math.

When she was 16 he was 4. That is borderline pedophilia.

"What is wrong with you people 12 years is not an ok age difference. You don't have many commonalities culturaly as different things happened during your childhood. And to be quite honest you have to do that reverse math."

@italianpride17 - what a stupid thing to say. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 12 year age difference, regardless of whether the woman is younger or older. It's all about the compatibility of the couple, not their age. Who cares what differences you had during your childhood? That just makes the relationship even more interesting, because you can share your past as well as your future.

I speak from experience. My mother is 7 years older than her husband. They are very happy. My father is 12 years older than his wife. They, also, are very happy. My sister is 14 years younger than her husband, and I am 13 years younger than mine. And yes, we are all happy, too. Any cultural or background differences only serve to enhance, not interfere with, the relationships.

"When she was 16 he was 4. That is borderline pedophilia."

Another stupid comment. Yes, if she was 16 and he was 4 of course it's paedophilia, but they are both consenting adults, well over the age of 18. As are all the members of my family currently in HAPPY relationships.

There's nothing wrong with us. We're all in happy, constructive marriages. What is wrong with YOU? (Apart from your narrow mind.)

reply

Agree with kjosm. you said all what I want to say.

reply

Totally agree with Kjosm. I don't like the comment after it though! I have a friend who is a relationship with someone who is 16 years older. and my younger sister is also in a relationship with a guy 15 years different. Age doesnt matter! The thing is though Sandra is young looking for her age. If you compare her with the cast of sex in the city, who are similar ages, she looks alot younger.

Either way she is an amazing actress!! :D & Ryan is just hot!!

reply

I thought it was a brilliant film and it was brilliant because of Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. Sandra Bullock is a legend. If the actress was younger then her role as the boss at that publishing firm would have been unbelievable.

Plus she knows how to work comedy.

Sandra Bullock is my favourite actress. She makes entertaining films. People watch her films because of her.
