So, she shows up (her ghost, that is), makes him revive all his traumatic experiences regarding her death once again, and then "frees" him to go on with his life.
IDK, I believe that if it was me, I would be feeling worse than before.

To tell the truth, I still don’t understand how she died or why he was shot. Did the movie make that clear?

What transpired between her ghost and him is what actually happened to her. She was going to kill herself and he tried to intervene. She accidentally shot him, then did kill herself.
