How true is this true story?

How accurate is this movie? I understand that some things in movies need to be spiced up but some storys lose their quality if they are too spiced up.

From my understanding it is 10% true but the real Eddie the Eagle saw the movie and was so touched that he cried and he endorses the film, feeling that it accurately captures the essence and spirit of the story.

I caught the trailer this morning at the Lady in the Van.

I was tearing up just watching the trailer!

Talentless and a loser? How's YOUR ski jumping?

reply

Unless the movie shows him finishing anything but last by 20 meters, it will be true. His story got a lot of attention during the 1988 Olympics.

Probably as good as Eddie's.

reply

It is evident from the film that skii jumping is an extremely difficult and dangerous thing to do. To be able to do it at all is pretty impressive. That he finished, even last, shows he was pretty good.

reply

All right then, give me three rounds if you're gonna be smart about it

reply

I think the only true thing would be that he finishes last by som distance.

It's that man again!!

To me it just seemed like they embellished the adversity he faced just a little bit, like I wonder if all these people were really all that cruel to him. But I don't think that diminishes the film whatsoever, fantastic story.

And if anyone is interested in a review for this movie- https://youtu.be/umvewb4c1Dc

Trying to go for an informative, and hopefully something people think is funny, youtube channel so hope you guys like. Thanks.

Actually the media was alot more cruel than the movie shows (overshadowed by the fans, which the media began noticing and then went along with it to 'cover the story'). In the movie the media loves him, in 1988 not so much and everyone thought of him as a joke.

same as Cool Runnings, in that film it was portrayed that no one wanted them there and in real life it was quite the opposite of what was shown on film

After reading his book I'd 10% was being very generous. In the movie he is depicted as a constant loser never beating anyone and only getting help from family and a disgraced ski bum.

In his book he talks about the other European ski jumpers he beat in competition, the help/equipment/coaching he received from many others and the occasional sponsorship.

Night and day difference between the two. I've read that Edwards approves of the movie and I did enjoy watching it.

Eddie the Eagle was only a bit more realistic than Cool Runnings which says a lot more about Cool Runnings. Hahahahaha.

Actually the book is at 11 O'Clock and the Movies is at 1 O'Clock, miles apart, but closer than anything else. Ja?

Edwards himself has said that the film's "only about 5%" true.

I know that for most viewers it's almost entirely irrelevant, but to some extent I do think it's a bit of a shame. Part of the problem is that the myth-building started almost immediately in Calgary (largely outside of Edwards' control), and much of it quickly became accepted "fact" (even very basic things, such as the way he's now known universally as "Eddie"), so it might have been nice to set some of that straight. Edwards' story is so extraordinary that it's difficult to see how the truth would have been less entertaining,

Having said that; in that BBC article, Edwards talks about a documentary being planned, so you never know...

well i guess it's up to people to realize that a movie based on true events does not equal said true events.
