Is he still british record holder?

Was big joke at the time but fair play to him he was the british record holder at ski jump. Anyone know if he still is?

reply

Unfortunatley Eddie no longer holds the British ski jump record. His mark of 73.5m achieved at Calgary 88', was bettered in 1994 by James Lambert with a jump of 81m. In 2002, Glen Pederson set another new British record with a whopping 85m. The current world record stands at 239m, although Eddie will always be my number 1.

Strictly speaking, the 239m record is for ski flying. The hills on which this is practised are designed differently to traditional ski jumping hills. They have longer approaches, and k-spots of around 185m. There are only a handful of such hills in the world today.

Eddie Edwards was competing on traditional 90m hills, designed for jumps in the 90-100m region. Significantly longer jumps are not only impossible on such hills, but would be extremely dangerous due to the upward curve of the deceleration zone. His 73.5m was heroic for a sport about which it is said, if you do not jump by the age of 10, you never will. Eddie was (I believe) 18 when he first jumped.

of course eddie is a joke, but then how many people would look down a ski jump slope and actually go down it? :o) I´m sure he is the only ski jumper that people remember.

Looking forward to this film if it ever makes it in production.
