Well made Commie crap (spoilers)

For the most part I really enjoyed the show but it was let down, much like Parasite, by crude communist messaging which pretends that a capitalist system is somehow oppressive. The South Korean filmmakers clearly weren’t aware of the gigantic communist gulag that is North Korea.

Ironically, the top down authoritarian hellscape of the Game World is much more akin to a communist system, complete with oligarch VIPs who hoard all of the wealth and completely disregard the lives of the main population. Hell, the Game World creators even controlled the money supply with the giant piggy bank in the sky, much like a communist command economy.

The twist with the old man being behind it all also rang false, enormous wealth had made him miserable. Well, get a family then. Only commies seem to think money is the answer to everything because they’re ruthless materialists. Normal people in free market countries have families and spirituality - these are the things that really give life meaning and lead to deep happiness and fulfilment.

For sheer entertainment Squid Game delivers, the tension is often unbearable, the character dynamics are great, the visuals are gorgeous. Which makes it all the more sad that its core ideas are fucking stupid.

Finally, the very ending was compromised to accommodate a new season, which we don’t need because it works better as a self-contained story. Turns out the show creators are greedy capitalists. How ironic.
