Question about the black bars

On some episodes at the beginning, they show scenes with black bars on the top and bottom, is that to make it feel "cinematic"?

Liking Season 10 a lot so far although I kinda hoped Amy's kid(s) would've been born but it's nice to see the progression of the story before that happens.

I believe it is to make it feel cinematic. If you'll notice those bars are gone when they cut to the next shot. The bars are just a matte they put over the image.

When I first read the thread title, I thought it said "Question about the black bras." I was thinking that I didn't remember any black bras on the show. lol
