Shut it off after 30 minutes

Will Ferrell was terrible. His sole facial expression regardless of the scene was befuddled dunce. He looks around with this blank face in every situation like an elderly person with dementia. He cannot sing or dance whatsoever. Using Tracy Morgan’s voice for the ghost of Christmas Yet Too Come was a horrible choice. He sounds like a Fat Albert cartoon character, not the menacing grim reaper. Picture something like Darth Vader storming into a Star Wars scene only he talks like Flip Wilson. The deciding factor in shutting it off was I hadn’t laughed even once after 30 minutes.

I watched it a few nights ago and found it to be very uneven. Some things worked, some things didn't, and some choices were just baffling. Overall it was a mixed bag.

I thought there were some good ideas but they weren't always well-realized. And Octavia Spencer as a love interest for Will Ferrell's character is a real head-scratcher.

I think I was in the wrong frame of mind when I first watched it and my original assessment now sounds way too negative. I will give it another try. I like the movies you’ve recommended to me in the past but I notice your review here is not exactly a ringing endorsement. So, I’m feeling pretty negative about the chances I will come around to like this one.

I was hoping for more from it. I can enjoy a musical when they work. This one only works sometimes, though I wouldn't place the blame upon the song and dance numbers, but rather upon some of the story choices the script writers made.

It's actually a frustrating movie to watch, in my experience, because there is a lot that is really good, but then there are these elements that are just not good and that derail what could've been a solid, rewatchable Christmas film.

This year was a disappointment for new Christmas films because I also had high hopes for A Christmas Story Christmas and it was a letdown as well.
