Dakota Johnson's "Madame Web" has finally released in cinemas and its opening weekend haul confirms it's another bomb at the box office for Sony.

Sony distributed the film, Columbia and Marvel produced it, at least according to wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madame_Web_(film)

But it is in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

I heard a lot of theaters were empty, or only had 1 or 2 people watching.

I think people don't go any more they wait to stream films nowdays

reply

It's not just that. Going to movie theaters these days is expensive, you have to sit through 20 solid minutes of commercials, the snacks and drinks are overpriced, and many movies (such as this one) are weapons-grade crap that aren't worth seeing. It's one of several reasons families don't go anymore, because it's too expensive, even for a family of 4. And yeah, they've learned the waiting game for streaming.

There have been successful theatrical releases recently, so the explanation can not be that exclusively.

Spider Man: No Way Home grossed nearly $2B

Nah, we had several movies that broke or approached a billion dollars last year. People just don't want to waste money on a movie that doesn't even look good in the trailer. They are sick of half hearted sequels, reboots of recent movies and overused movie IPs. That's why the biggest movies of last year were none of those things. Wonka fits a little, but 3 movies in 40 years isn't exactly oversaturation.
