Worth watching even for a laugh?

Both critics and audiences hated this. Maybe it's one of those "so bad it's good".

I AM ASSUMING IT IS MEDIOCRE TO NOT BAD.

reply

yes its that bad, my whole theater was making fun of the movie

It is a failure in what it is trying to do.

It is a studio film, so a lot of professionals were working on it, the camera work, the CGI, actors are all adequate, but it is like using a lot of expensive ingredients and made a subpar meal worse than cheap fast food, it is not so bad you have the satisfaction of energetically expressing your disdain.

It is just lukewarm and underwhelming.

Everyone is trying, but the script and direction are just so lazy, they don't even try to convince you why these people do what they do. The bad guy just had to kill the girls in board daylight in front of everyone, even he knew everything about them, why can't he just wait for them to go home, and kill them quietly? Madam Web once found out her mother knew the bad guy in Peru, and she just had to go to Peru and went into amazon forest looking for clues, yeah, that won't take years to find anything. But she said she would be back in a week, and sure enough, it looked like it took even less time than that, and she got all the answers.

In the end this is a middle aged woman and 3 abandoned teenage girls story, but I am just not convinced Dakota Johnson as a mother figure, and the 3 girls are just not very interesting, and that is 3 attractive girls, yet I just don't care about any of them. It is not that they are bad actresses, it is just they haven't been given much.

I think the failure is mostly on the script, direction and casting.

If you watch for free, it is not completely waste of time, everyone in it is unrealistically good looking, and in the end you can sigh or say in an underwhelmed way about how could a movie this bad got made.

I did not even muster enough enthusiasm for a review post, but you asked, so here it is.

Ezekiel has surely got to be the most incompetent bad guy in any superhero ever made, right? He has enhanced physical strength and agility, he could have killed every one of them so easily at the fireworks factory at the end just by jumping at each of them and then snapping their necks.

Agreed that the film is laughable though and it's failure is entirely on the script. Surely these writers (who have written Gods of Egypt, Morbius and now Madame Web) are unhireable at this point and have proven what hacks they are.

reply

Yeah, at least I could not think of anyone worse than Ezekiel.

I also thought the script was the main problem. If Morbius did not make it clear how bad those writers are, this one should make it so evident beyond any doubt. Those are clearly B movie writers.

Also Dakota Johnson I think is probably the most glaring casting error, they need someone more like a mother figure, or at least a big sister, she just does not look like she is someone who could lead the girls, at least the movie did not show that.

Apparently they just want to cast good looking people, the supporting male cast also showed that.

I admit I liked it a bit but was disappointed as the trailers made it look like a movie about a bunch of Spider-Women fighting against a bunch of badguys and that is not what it was. It's a shame it was a financial failure as I would have liked to see a sequel set years later about these Spider-Women. But it wasn't meant to be.

reply

No, I think it meant to set up 3 teenage super heroes, that is something both Sony and Marvel (AKA Disney) have been trying to do.

They no longer want to make movies for young adults, like what Marvel used to do.
