Why did Rhaenys stand vigil over Vaemond's body rather than attend Viserys Last Supper ?

Is there anything to be read into that ? Is she having second thoughts about her new alliance with Rhaenyra perhaps ?

reply

I don't think that Rhaenys was meant to attend the dinner since she was not immediate family to King Viserys (I think she's a cousin). Also, Vaemond was her brother-in-law, and probably had some sort of familiarity with him and perhaps even a friendly relationship. She also knew that he was right regarding the bloodline.

For some reason I was thinking that Rhaenys was Viserys' sister but you're right she's most likely a cousin.

Rhaenys is the daughter of the seconds son of King Jaeharys I., Viserys and Daemon are the sons of his third son (pardon me, if there are some kids between). Most of his kids died early (*cough* incest), so their kids were the ones with the highest chance. Even if they had once a good relationship (kind of hinted in the first episodes), it was clearly destroyed by all the betrayals in favor of Viserys family.
tldr: She is their oldest cousin.

I doubt she cared for him very much, he tried to put her and her grandkids out of Driftmark. But it is sorta her job to be there to represent the Velaryons. If corlys is truly gone, she is the one truly running things at Driftmark until Lucerys is old enough.

1. Her husband always said what he thinks is best for the family, he was very clear last episode. As he is not dead at that point, this had been quite a betrayal to her husband.
2. He is just his brother in law, he does not look like he would keep her much around (if he is not forced in some way, like with a dragon) (in the books he is just a cousin, so even less claim)
3. Rhaenyra offered her (bastard) sons with the right name to her definitely true born grand-children. So her grand-daughters become Queen consort and Lady consort of Driftmark. Beside her grand-daughters were quite happy, every time this was announced. The boys are handsome and strong at last.

So basically she gets her grand-grand children still in the best position possible with this move. Furthermore, she would never be kicked out of Driftmark, as neither Rhaenyra nor her grand-daughters would ever do it. Yes, she has to accept the boys, but its definitely the best outcome for her.
