Exploitative?

I had a conversation once with a friend who condemned this film on the basis that it was a shameless exploitation of a real world event just to make money.

I argued that art sometimes does mirror real world events metaphorically to achieve worthwhile purposes, maybe even to simply raise awareness on a given subject.

They were not convinced. Nor did I find myself very convincing.

Just wondering how others would have responding to the objection.
