Eli's former watcher..

I am curious if Oskar will share the same fate as Eli's old watcher? As he will age and change with time, will the same thing inevitably happen to him?

reply

the book answers this if you want to read it.

If not, then Oskar and Eli become happy vampires together.

reply

Hardly. Oskar is running out in the freezing cold Swedish winter; I see four options:
-Oskar freezes to death
-Oskar gives up while he's still alive and goes home to mum
-Eli finds a new helper who can find shelter (a new "Blackeberg") to him and Oskar (yuck..)
-Oskar becomes a vampire like Eli, so he can stand the cold. He has already tried to mix blood with Eli once, now he could just go all the way and the cold is gone

I'm still wondering how two 12-year olds are going to rent an apartment and all that... 😉

reply

But It is an open question whether two 12y vampires need to rent an apartment at all.

reply

True. But think back at all the movie endings you've watched where they took a LOT of liberties. A cop just shot 20 bad guys blew up 2 buildings and crashed a dozen cars. And he just calmly walks away as the credits roll.

reply

True. But why did he have one with Hakan? (Why need a 'helper' anyway, clumsy murders will only draw more attention to yourself?)

reply

The film doesn't tell, but the novel does. It's stated that Eli hibernates for long periods, and when waking up he's weak and prefer/need help to get blood the first time. It is also indicated that Oskar meets Eli shortly after waking up from hibernation. Håkan has been his helper for a while, but not long enough to become an experienced killer.

What Drakkar said, but also...

Eli really hates killing. So Eli arranges for someone else to that for him. Not that Håkan likes killing either, but hey, life isn't always fair ... and he was willing to serve to begin with.

If Håkan is doing the killing and draining there is absolutely no risk that Eli could infect someone. Random inexperienced vampires going on killing sprees will create more of a problem than a few bungled exsanguinations. The less evidence for the supernatural, the better for Eli.

Uhmm... am I missing something? Eli is a girl, right?

I know that in the movie she says one or two times "I am not a girl", but I assumed she just meant "I am not a normal girl" or "I am not a human girl".

reply

Nope, he is a castrated (neutered) boy.
In the shower scene the neutering scar is visible. It is very brief but rather explicit.
We also get a hint about this as Håkan likes young boys (for the wrong reasons), and he also likes Eli. The book is rather explicit about this.

Of course a viewer shouldnt have to need IMDB to fill them in on what LTROI is to them. To me whether Eli is a boy or vampire says the same thing, its about acceptance and pure love. Having said that, when I first saw LTROI I had no idea that Eli was meant to be seen as a boy and frankly the choice of Lina Leandersson may have convinced Tomas Alfredson not to emphasize this aspect of the book because the actress was very girlish. It works with Eli being a girl very well.

reply

Right, and Ms. Leandersson herself said she thought she was playing a girl.

I've written post-LTROI/post-LTODD fan fictions, some of which show Eli as a boy, some as a girl. The feelings engendered by the stories work the same either way

"We never really grow up. We just learn how to act in public."

reply

Sounds reasonable, this is not a topic easily brought up with a 11 years girl actress, it might even affect her acting. Besides, Alfredson's way of directing Lina and Kåre was to teach them the lines and moods the same day the scenes were shot. And, Lina didn't actually shoot that scene, it was a dummy made from her torso.

On the other hand, most people (including me) are not used to think along the lines that kid girls actually are castrated boys, so that they need some time to grasp it perhaps is a good thing.

reply

Why was a girl cast to play Eli if Eli is a boy?

reply

The author did infact ask them to consider a boy playing Eli. That said, Eli did pass for a girl by many, including Oskar. My impression was that he looked more like a girl in the film than in the book. I watched the stage play directed by Hultcrantz back in 2012, and in this
adaptation both Eli and Oskar were acted by women. Which worked well and created a great distance between Oskar and the bullies.

^^^This is your opinion. Lina Leandersson herself thought of Eli as a girl. Dont even know if she knew anything otherwise. The use of a dubbed voice was not necessarily to show any masculinity in Eli but could be used to show her age and her experience in life that are far more than any adult nevermind someone the age Eli looked. I love her dubbed voice, dubbed by Elif Ceylan a girl actress too.

Eli didn't once pretend to be a girl in the film.
