I would concur with the other poster who said the film is "pretty decent." I agree with that. It's pretty decent. Like a 6.5/10. It's not a classic.
I did get the Christmas Story vibes though. The inspiration there was clear. Of course the NES is the Red Ryder.
I'm not sure that I'll ever watch it again, but it was a fairly good watch the first time around and the film comes together at the end.
